If I have the right Edmund, his father was William Fletcher and William had a sister Sarah who married George Nelmes at Cinderford on 24 Dec 1881. George and Sarah had a son Albert Nelmes (born c 1891) who had a wife called Maude; I know that this is correct because they both signed a card at the 80th birthday party for Albert's older sister Miriam in December 1962.
I am not sure when Albert got married. It might be to Florence M Jones in the September quarter of 1925 (Monmouth 11a71); there were lots of Florence Maud(e) Jones born in Mon and Glos at about the right time.
Is this cousin Maud?

I've been trying to find a bit more information about Lydia. The address is 20 Conduit Street and a lot of fashion houses were located in this area. How can I find out the history of the building?

I have also got very stuck and confused by the number of Fletchers and Jones in your area, many with similar christian names. Can you give me any information about the migration of people between Forest of Dean and the Newport area in Wales. My grandparents (Emma and Edmund Fletcher ran the post office in Rogerstone near Newport and lived at the same address - my mother and her siblings grew up there - but I can't find any trace of this in the records. Thanks

Two little snippets to add to Slowhands' encyclopaedic replies.

Edmund's parents, William Fletcher and Caroline, got married on 24th December 1881 at St John's Cinderford. On the same day at the same place William's younger sister Sarah (my Great Gran!) married George Nelmes. Each couple acted as witnesses to the other's marriage. In those days, with people allowed very few days off work, it was quite common to get married on holidays such as Christmas. Sarah and Caroline were both in service (1881 census) in Leckhampton, just outside Cheltenham; maybe Sarah introduced Caroline to her brother!!

A tricky question! William and Sarah's mother was Letitia Fletcher (nee Ruck). Her parents were John and Susannah Ruck who got married on 21st May 1826, less than five months before Letitia was born (Baptised 8th October 1826). Records of their wedding show the bride as Susannah Brain, spinster, but the birth certificate of their daughter Mary Ann (1839) indicates that she was originally Susannah Clifton and had been married before to a Mr Brain.

This is confirmed by records for Letitia's older sister Jane (shown as Jane Ruck in the 1841 census) which show that she was baptised on 27th July 1823 as Jane Brain with parents John and Susannah Brain. I have raised a question before about the date of death of John Brain; knowing this might give us a clue as to whether Letitia's father was John Brain or John Ruck! A tricky and interesting question!!

This is all fantastic. I think you have found my grandmother's family, because I remember she had a sister, Maud, but I didn't remember a Lilian. I think the marriage record for Llanelli is correct, because I don't remember any conversations that were not about the family either in Wales or Gloucestershire. Richard would make sense as my gg grandfather - my mother may have named my brother after her grandfather. The Emmas live on too - I named my daughter after my grandmother.

This brings me back to Edmund, who died before I was born and whose family is a complete mystery to me. It would be wonderful if you could hand me a few more clues about his siblings, parents etc.

My grandmother may have had a sister called Maud. I can't remember the name of Emma's mother, but I believe she had a twin called Lydia (Aunt Lydd who I don't believe ever married. My mother's siblings were Mary (an older sister by a year or two) and William, her younger brother by a year or two. Mary died in 2000 and William died at the age of 52 - so in the 1960s.

Thanks, this confirms that the man on the 1891 and 1911 census records is almost certainly my Edmund, but I can find no trace of their marriage in the area. My mother's birth was registered by my grandmother Emma Jones - was it customary for the mother to enter her maiden name when registering, or could it be they were not married at that point. That would have been surprising in their case.

As I am so new to this, I am not sure where to look next for the marriage or establish whether the family in Avening is my grandparents and my aunt (mum's older sister. I am trying to find out more about my grandfather who died relatively young and also to trace the Welsh side of the family (Emma Jones was Welsh and my mother spent her youth in the Newport area. I will probably try and find the death record for Edmund which would have been about 1945 in the Newport area.

Any tips? I am determined not to give up!

Edmund FLETCHER born abt 1885

I am only just getting started, but have already found what looks like a brick wall. My mother Patti was born in the Forest of Dean in 1912 and lived (I think) in Yorkley. She had an older sister Mary (abt 1911)and a younger brother William (abt 1914). My grandparents were Edmund Fletcher (abt 1885) and Emma Jones (b 1886). I have found a census record of who I think is my grandfather born in Lydney - and the 1911 summary shows an E Fletcher living with two others (both female) in Avening - so I guess this could be my grandmother and aunt Mary. This is as far as it goes. Like so many people I wasn't taking notes when my mother recounted her history and she is sadly not here to tell me these stories any more. Can anyone help with more information please.
