WILKES (reply)

To answer my own question on communication links between Lydney and 'the other side', the Victoria County history of Gloucestershire states that the ferry passage at Purton was well used during the 19th century, being closed and replaced by a footway across the Severn Railway bridge when the latter was opened.

It must have been a spectacular, if rather exposed, walk. I do not recall seeing anyone walking on it on the few times I crossed it by train.

WILKES (reply)

Thank you very much for this helpful response, I do not have access to the Gloucestershire marriage index.

Could it be that Richard and Samuel were not baptised? was non-baptism a rare event around 1800?

Assuming that they were, it must be outside the Forest, and there is a close historical link between Lydney and the vale of Berkeley (but does this precede the construction of the Severn railway bridge?). This is encouraging, but I worry somewhat about the different spelling of the surname.

I presume the baptism should read 19 Feb 1809 as given by slowhands? In which case the match to age at death is very good, and so is occupation, although labourers are very common.

Furthermore this Samuel has a nephew Reuben. Only about 1 in 1000 males on the FoD database is called Reuben, and Samuel had a grandson Reuben, so the commonality of this name is very suggestive.

Free BMD gives Richard's death in Mar 1855 and Hannah's in Sep 1843.
