Thank you so much for all your help. You've been brilliant. I will attempt to find a link to see whether we are related. Toomey is an Irish name from the Cork area and comes from the Gaelic O'Tuama (burial mound or hill)but I have found no link with Ireland, so far. Do you have any Irish info? Thanks once again

TOOMEY Family from Churcham (reply)

Also, Alison, it might be worth searching the parish records on here for links in neighbouring parishes using all the spellings noted by m p griffiths plus "Toommy." In those days it didn't matter so much how a name was spelt as how it sounded. I'm not a mine of information but happened to know that next door at Minsterworth on 29 Dec 1794 Ann "Toommy" (the only record or transcription by that spelling) married Richard Sterry, both said to be of that parish. They were my gt-gt-gt-gt-grandparents. The family website referred to may have confined itself to Churcham and/or limited spellings and timespan - I don't know. Richard Sterry (signing as "Steery" and some of the family today using "Sterrey") is the earliest identified ancestor up that line but might have been connected to much earlier Sterrys of Longhope and Ruardean. I'm not aware of any earlier Toommys or similar related to me, whether at Churcham, Minsterworth or elsewhere but then again I haven't looked very hard for them.

Toomey Family from Churcham

My name is Alison Toomey, I live in Swansea and this is my first posting so please be gentle with me. I can trace some of my Toomey family back to about 1821 in Churcham. My first definite family member is Peter Toomey born about 1821/2 who was baptised in Churcham on 7th April 1822. I think he 'may' have been the son of William & Elizabeth Toomey (they may have had another son George born about 1820). Peter Toomey married Ellen (Preedy, I think) who was also born in Churcham. They had 5 children (William, George, Mary Ann, James & Albert). William was my ancestor and was the only child to be born in Churcham although the family didn't stray very far and only went to Herefordshire. I visited William's grave last summer at St. Weonards, Hereford and left some flowers and a letter hoping someone would make contact but I had no luck. One of his sons, George Joseph Toomey (my great-grandfather), left Hereford as a young man and moved to Swansea and I'm still here. Do any of these names ring a bell with anyone? I hope they do because it would be great to make contact with someone. I hope to hear from you.
