Grinder Street, Monmouth (reply)

In the BNA the first mention of Glendower Street is in 1838 and the last mention of Grinder Street is in 1846 (apart from two later historical references). I wonder if this reflects the refusal of some die-hards to recognise the change!

Grinder Street, Monmouth (reply)

In the 1851 census he is in Glendower Street.

Also in 1841 census near Glendower St

There are/were a number of passages running off Monnow St that may have included a Grinder St - need to get an old map out just in case its marked :-)

Thomas Fletcher of Monmouth
Property on Bark Land and Grinder Street, Monmouth

<><><>
Glendower St is probably named after Owain Glyndŵr anglicised by William Shakespeare as Owen Glendower

http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Wales-History/Glendower.htm

and the association with Henry V and Monmouth

Grinder Street, Monmouth

I have an ancestor Henry Collins who is listed as a fishmonger of Grinder Street in Pigot's Directory of 1830 and also on his own marriage certificate of 1842. In the 1851 census he is in Glendower Street.
Is this the same street, and if so when was the name changed? Or was it a street which has disappeared, in which case where was it?

David Collins
