The Old Severn Bridge in 1964 (reply)

The rail crossing at Gloucester was the "lowest " point to cross the Severn in 1964 above ground. The Severn tunnel was funtioning and of course the Rail bridge at Chepstow , a rail journey Salisbury - Bristol - Severn Tunnel - Chepstow/Lydney (?)

The Old Severn Bridge in 1964 (reply)

Hi Peter

The bridge was badly damaged in 1960, two of the central spans having come down. It couldn't be used after that and was eventually knocked down.

The Old Severn Bridge in 1964

Hello All,

Back in 1964 My new wife and I came to Lydney From Salisbury on
the 26 th of April a Sunday to honeymoon at My Auntie and Uncles House at Coalway . We both remember the train coming across the old bridge, across the Severn, a journey I had done several times in the fifties.

My wife remembers me saying come and look out of the window at the Severn River.

Just recently I was looking up the information on that old bridge
and according to the information on several sites it was out of action owing to a Barge having collide with it at a date some weeks before, eventually of course it was demolished, does anyone have any knowledge of that period, and did we in fact come over via a second bridge.

We are positive about the dates does anyone have any imformation
about it say maybe the bridge was temorary scaffolded at the break ,
caused by the barge or were we on another bridge.

Thank you in anticipation.

Peter Jenkins
