1841 census - Districts (reply)

Nic

Look at the 1841 census for Swindon - and look at the Enumerator's notes for the 3 Districts (only three) ( think you belong to Ancestry)

this will show you what areas where classed as Swindon then - like Walcot, Eastcott Hill etc - so to Thomas, this would be Swindon - not what we would think of Swindon today.

There is one Jefsee/Jessee (assume christened James COLLIER) age 20 - Labourer, born in County - District 8, Page 8

There is quite clusters of COLLIERS, at Wroughton, about 3 miles - Sub Reg: District of Swindon on census returns

Also William Austin COLLIER/Thomas Austin COLLIER - there are Austin's at Wroughton - I say this because my dad/and his nephew (Swindon bred) Christians names were Austen - and AUSTIN was their x Grandmother's maiden name, and my 'expected' new Grandson will have Austen as his middle name.

Thomas COLLIER 1805/6 -1875 Wiltshire - > Apperley (reply)

Slowhands you are a diamond i had missed the 1871 census just couldn find him anywhere!!!thats probably because of the last name spelling as "collins" i would have ignored it!!! And you've thrown chelts back in there slyly ha ha!Also i had never thought about them having baptised him any where along the canal/waterways so i may never actually pinpoint him so i can find his parents????hhhmmmm????typical the actual "Collier" line has been elusive from the begining!,I had always grown up beleiving i was coventry born and bred, and as all my grand parents had passed on by the time i was 9 had never really asked the question,It was great grandad who came to coventry early 1900's Edwin thomas collier or Thomas as he is listed in a few records so just goes to show people get about a bit! cheers cant thank you enough

If you look at Google maps, you will see how close Tirley and Deerhurst are to the water.

I've checked my Gloucestershire CD's for burials/births of COLLIER - parents Thomas & Ann(e) - and can't find any that are appropriate - as there is only one child listed O/Austin on the 1841 age 2 - and this couple married in 1832 - so the Wiltshire Indexs' are worth checking.

A short Canal exists from the River Severn at Wainlode near Tirley / Apperley heading towards Cheltenham , at Coombe Hill on the A38. This was originally planned as the Cheltenham Canal. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/59078

Thomas COLLIER 1802/5 swindon/Canal (reply)

Now that has gone and done it!it all makes sense now as a waterman he would have traveled to gloucester with work on the waterways!i have Thomas collier 1808 born in calne to a Thomas Collier 1771+Betty Mortimer 1761 penciled in on my Ancestry.co family tree from a suggested link i have the mortimer family back to 1653!but no way of tying it all together till now,i had missed the "waterman" job title...........looking good i think. But it does,nt matter where i search there doesnt seem to be anyone searching the collier family this far back it just runs dry at the confusing mr"Thomas collier"thanks so far everybody for your input, this seems to be a very very helpful site, and cannot thankyou all enough, especially Christine Willcox who gave me this link....
thanks nic
p.s its just come to me as i looked at the canal site you listed as i came to the canal refurbishment section,i actually worked on 3 of the locks being refurbed at the minute, they had been dredged, drained and dammed off so we could work on the brickwork and seal the leaks and pumped cement grout behind lock walls to sure them up,its mad to think my 3xgreatgrandfather could have worked these locks 150+ years ago.....small world....

The Kennet & Avon Canal was completed to Swindon in 1804 - branches at Calne & Chippenham - it could be the family were all Watermen.

Thomas COLLIER married Betty MORTIMER - 13 April 1794 Calne

The Canal used to run through the centre of Swindon across Regent Street when I was a child.
