George HURCOMB Accidentally Drowned 14th October 1837 (reply)

The Bristol Mercury (Bristol, England), Saturday, October 28, 1837; Issue 2488.
Port of Gloucester

The following accidents occured during the last week at Sharpness Point, are
additional proofs of the dangerous navigation to this port.

The first occured on Saturday last to the Eldon of Plymouth, a large ship with a
cargo of timber of about 700 tons: she had been towed up by two steam tugs, but
the run of the tide off the entrance of the locks was so strong that they let go an
anchor with chain cable, which snapped like a thread and she drifted on the Waferidge
sands; she was, however, fortunately brought up on the opposite shore in safety, and
has only sustained a trifling damage. In the confusion attending her stiking, the custom house officer from Beachley, Mr Hurcomb, fell over board and was drowned; his body was found on Monday near the Noose sand.
