Frederick THOMAS 1868 (reply)

I agree that it doesn't look as though Maria REEKS is Mary Jane's mother. On Mary Jane's birth certificate it does not give a maiden name for Maria. Perhaps Mary Jane was illegitemate. If James was dead by this time, Mary Jane could have been born out of wedlock. Perhaps quite a few unmarried girls or widows went to the Chepstow workhouse to give birth away from their own neighbourhood. It would be nice to find Mary Jane in the 1871 census that may give us a clue.

Frederick and Mary Jane Thomas (reply)

I have received birth cert for Mary Jane. Unfortunatley there is no additional info than on FOD baptism record for Mary Jane. It shows no father and no other name ( maiden name ) for Mary Jane's mother Maria. It looks as though I am at a dead end again. Maybe something will turn up one day. Thank you all for your efforts.

Frederick THOMAS 1868 (reply)

My interest in this discussion is that Mary Jane Thomas was my wife's g.grandmother. Some of the information here causes some difficulty. It is established that Jacob REEKS and Elizabeth PRICE had a daughter Maria and that she was born circa 1831. It is also established that she married a James THOMAS between Jan-Mar 1856. It is also thought that he was a soldier and died early 1860's. It has been assumed that Mary Jane THOMAS was their daughter - born in 1863 in the Union Workhouse, Chepstow. However there is now a record which shows Maria THOMAS (a widow) marrying a Charles WHITE in 1862. Therefore why do we have Maria THOMAS (nee REEKS) who is now WHITE giving birth to a Mary Jane THOMAS? Also the 1861 Census shows Jacob REEKS and Elizabeth with Maria THOMAS (age 31) Ellen THOMAS (age 6) and Albert THOMAS (age 3 months) all enumerated at the same address. It is interesting that neither Maria, Ellen or Albert are shown as having a relationship to Jacob but that could merely be the whim of the enumerator. I can find no other record of these children although with an infant of 3 months the assumtion has to be that he was Maria's son. I am becomming less convinced that this Maria REEKS is the mother of Mary Jane THOMAS. I have ordered a marriage certificate for Henry B Clements and Mary Jane and will let you know the outcome in due course.

Birthplace Glam Pen____ (reply)

Thanks to all for your replies. I'll tell you my story so far. My grandfather was named Frederick Thomas. Married in Rotherham, South Yorks 27th Dec 1891 to Emma Simpson at Rotherham Parish Church. Father's name on certificate given as James Thomas Occ. Carpenter. Fred's age on marriage cert. given as 23 years. Census returns in Rotherham give age 45 on 1911 return born Gloucester, age 33 on 1901 census born Gloucester.
The 1891 census shows him living in Nottingham Street, Rotherham with Henry and Mary Jane Clements, relationship given as boarder born Woolaston age 23 occ. coal miner. Mary Jane's place of birth given as Chepstow Monmouth. Mary Jane Clements was shown as witness on marriage certificate for Frederick and Emma.
Checked for Mary Jane's birth on FOD parish records which turned up Union workhouse Chepstow. Mon 28 Oct 1863. Mother given as Maria Thomas but no father.Mary Jane Thomas married Henry Clements 21st Dec 1879. Father given as James Thomas deceased occ. Soldier. 1881 census shows Mary Jane and Henry Clements in Rotherham with Mary Jane's age given as 19 years.
Checked BMD for Fred all quarters 5 years either side of 1868 without success. There was a likely candidate but he died age 2. Another Frederick born 10th May 1869 with James as father in East Dean was shown on 1901 census still in Westbury on Severn, ages matched. Frederick's birthday is unknown, he died before I was born and there is now no one alive who remembers his birth date as far as I know.
I was doing another search of FOD a couple of days ago when I turned up will for James Thomas occ Carpenter died 10 May 1877 with a Mary Jane as beneficiary. Next jobs to do are sending for birth cert. for Mary Jane and copy will for James. Is Mary Jane, Fred's sister or maybe aunt ?
Any ideas. Thanks again
