Gloucester Goal Records (reply)

Some years ago, I was looking for a relative who we knew was guilty of a crime around 1900 - 1910. The police records at Gloucester archives were closed, so I contacted the head of Gloucester police, explained the circumstances and asked if I could see their records. I was given a letter for the archives giving me permission to have that one record accessed. However, I was living in Halifax at the time and before I could get to Gloucester again, I found the information from a different source, so never used the letter.

Calendar of Prisoners 1905-1910 Gloucester (reply)

If you can establish that the records exist at the Archives and are available for viewing on site, and if you can get to Alvin Street, Gloucester, I think you can get a day reader's ticket for £5. You can either wait while they get the material out of storage, which generally takes about 45 minutes, or you can order it in advance to be handy when you get there (although on my last visit that didn't work and I still had to wait.)

If you can't get to Gloucester, the Archives can give you a list of people willing to do research for you, but start thinking at around £40. You or an agent can photograph archived material but you have to pay a fee for using your camera which again I think was £5 last time I was there.

Calendar of Prisoners 1905-1910 Gloucester (reply)

Gloucester Archives Office have given me 3 Ref no to look at but having done an online search for them you cant actually see anything, so perhaps you are correct in saying about the 100yr rule. I have emailed them again to ask if they are available to view on line. If not will have to try and find another source.

Calendar of Prisoners 1905-1910 Gloucester (reply)

I asked about this at Gloucestershire Archives a couple of years ago as I thought I had a relative at Gloucester gaol in the 1891 census. They replied something to the effect that they held 3 volumes of some sort of records including some photos, but I never followed it up as I decided the so-called relative wasn't related after all.

Also, during some googling I saw www.hidden-heritage.co.uk/2009/06/21/victorian-and-edwardian-prisoners/ which might be worth the money if it has your Pillowell man, although it only appears to run to 1906. Perhaps it was published when for practical purposes a 100-years cut-off meant 1906, in which case it might soon be updated to include 1911 and therefore Mr Davis. The website includes a form for commenting.

Gloucester Goal Records (reply)

I wonder if they are judged "too recent" - 100years and all that ?

the gaol calendars, 1815-1879, seems to be the extent of available Goal records via the database search.

Gloucester Goal Records

On the 1911 census my Grandfather Thomas Davis [born 1871 in Pillowell] is showing as being in Gloucest Goal. In 1901 his was living in Pillowell with his wife and 2 children, in 1911 his wife Ellen and 5 children are living in Blakeney. I have been in touch with Gloucestershire Archives Office and they have very kindly given me some referecne numbers to look up. I have searched their site with the Ref nos. they have given me but they all come up with no records found. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out Why,When and for How Long he was in Gaol. The only dates I have to go on is that he had a son born in July 1911 and then the next child was born in 1914.
