Margaret GRIFFITH nee ROBERTS c. 1750ish (reply)

Births for Margaret Roberts in parish registers in the date range:

200173 1753 ROBERTS Margaret John Anne Awre
94696 1754 ROBERT Margaret Christopher Jane Newent

172639 1757 ROBERTS Margaret Daniel Elizabeth of the Parish of Newland Mitcheldean

Marriages for two of the three sets of parents:

24493 1746 ROBERTS Christopher MIDDLETON Jane Newent
39985 1737 ROBERTS John MOILES Anne Awre

No marriage in parish registers for Daniel and Elizabeth Roberts

We can discard the Awre birth, which leaves us with Newent and Newland. The Newent birth didn't appear in the search previously, because I had searched ROBERTS, and the "S" appears in the marriage record but not in Margaret's birth record.

Margaret GRIFFITH nee ROBERTS c. 1750ish (reply)

Plot complication for this Daniel as my Margaret's father: He and Mary had a daughter, Margaret, in 1739. I could not find a death for her. There are deaths for several Mary's during the requisite period, but no marriage for a Daniel to Elizabeth. There is a death recorded for a Daniel in Ross in 1759 . . .

Margaret and James GRIFFITHS were living in Bream/Forest when their two youngest children were born. Before that I don't believe a residence was recorded. Their son James later lists his birthplace as Yorkley.

There is also the possibility that Hannah was a cousin of Margaret's and not a sister.

Daniel and Mary had the following children at Ross:

1733 William (died as infant)
1736 Elizabeth
1737 Jno
1739 Margaret
1742 Daniel
1744 Ann
1745 George
1747 Hannah

Margaret GRIFFITH nee ROBERTS c. 1750ish (reply)

That seems like a significant hint! But it puts the age of the deceased Margaret even further out of whack (assuming she was baptised as an infant) but I know that age is frequently not overly accurate. The 1757 makes a certain amount of sense when you consider that James and Margaret's eldest son, James, was born in 1784. Her youngest, Sarah, was born in 1800.

No hints in the sons' names here . . . she had neither a John nor a Daniel. She did have a daughter Elizabeth, though, and no Ann. Another point for Daniel and Elizabeth as her parents.

So the next question is: Is the age (of the deceased Margaret)inaccurate, or is it not the same Margaret?

So now I need to look to see if Hannah is Margaret's half sister . . . (Daniel and Elizabeth had two children together that are in the parish records . . . Robert, c. 1853 and Margaret, c. 1757.

The Awre Margaret (Blakeney again!) had a sister, Anne, c, 1738.

The Newland/Mitcheldean parents have a son c. 1753 named Robert. Robert Roberts. Seems appropriate for my family tree -- given that I am a descendent of two people named Lewis Lewis.

Parish Chapel Awre

I have a marriage betwee John Roberts and Anne Moiles in Awre; Ann is the daughter of William Moiles (MOYLE) and Lucey. There is a marriage is 1730 between Willliam MOYLE and Lewis (sic) WALLARD. Wallard is an unusual name for any of the registers, so I am not sure the minister recorded it accurately -- especially since "Lucey" was recorded as "Lewis". (Not that Lewis is not a wonderful name . . .)

This is in the wrong parish, but the year is closest to the age of the Margaret whose burial is listed above. It is also a red herring; I just found this Margaret's death record -- she died as an infant.

This leaves this as the most likely parents:Second possibility:

172639
Entry Number
Year 1757
Month May
Parish Chapel Mitcheldean

This is the correct parish (Newland, not Mitcheldean), but the date is further out than I would have otherwise expected. Is the minister's name significant as to why this child was baptised in Mitcheldean?
