The 1911 census images are available now on Ancestry - they state

'We've completed the first stage of the England & Wales 1911 census release, so you can browse all the scanned pages recorded images for the whole of the country right now. We've already started transcribing the records to make them fully seachable.

I found this to be very helpful thanks to you. It was useful and interesting, sadly though not for the Forest of Dean branches of my family. I found several relevant wills, one particularly helpful because it proved that the people I know are related to me were related to another person I thought possibly was. This has led to my finding out all sorts of other interesting things.

What about Probate Records before 1858?

The Probate Service does not hold any records or documents prior to 1858. If you require information about these, you are recommended to contact:

The National Archives,
Kew,
Richmond,
Surrey, TW9 4DU

or your local authority archivist for guidance.

The National Archives also have a research guide on where to start your research prior to 1858.

Thanks for the response. It would appear that there is now a different address to write to (than what is on the original form), and they don't mention having to fill in a form on the website. I might copy the relevant info from the form and fill that it in when sending my request.

Here is the info taken from the website:

If you make your own search and order copies by post: £6 for a 4 year period search from the date of death for each estate: this fee includes a copy of the grant and will (if any), regardless of the number of pages.

If you write and ask for a search: £6 (This covers the four year period from the date of death). There is a further search fee of £4 for each subsequent 4 year period searched. If a grant is traced, the fee includes a copy of the will (if any), regardless of the number of pages, and copy of the grant.

If you wish to write for a search and/or copy, you should write to The Postal Searches & Copies Dept, Leeds District Probate Registry, York House, York Place, Leeds LS1 2BA where a special unit deals with such requests.

A standing search (and extension of a 'standing search'): £6 which includes a copy of the grant and a copy of the will.

Payment should be made by cheque or postal order, payable to HMCTS.

If you are applying from outside the UK, payment should be made by international money order expressed in pounds sterling. If you attend an office in person, you may of course pay cash.

the download PDF still seems to work - We have had a reorganisation of Government deptaments so perhaps we should now look on the DoJ site :-

Does anyone know what's happened to the website that you order the wills from? The link from this website comes up with an error, and it's the same link that is used by Ancestry.co.uk as well.
