Marriage of Joseph Hatton and Sarah about 1800 (reply)

I might end up posting this twice using my iPhone. Thomas Hatton was the son of William Hatton and was born in Lancahshire 1739. He married MARY Bick of Barnwood so we have a new branch of the Hatton family. I believe his daughter MARY was the mother of Cornelius Hatton born 1809. This family spelled the name with an E HattEn. Later changed to the correct spelling HATTON. They mixed in and many assumed this was one of the 3 branches. It may have become so with the children of Thomas andMary Bick.
This is my conclusion now that I found Thomas of 1739 in Lancashire and his father named William. A major break in the Hatton mysteries. Cornelius was also in Barnwood in my thousand of files! MARY is the right age and when she gave birth she was MARY HattEn and Cornelius Cornelius Hatten.
I would suggest that males take the Y DNA test. Those with unarmed fathers are likely to find their male line family. I am the administrator of the Hatton-HattEn DNA group at familytreedna.

Marriage of Joseph Hatton and Sarah about 1800 (reply)

Hi Ian

Yes, I'm in contact with Jim from Canada and have been for some years now. We actually met up earlier this year for the first time and will be meeting again at the HATTON/EDDY/WATKINS ancestor get together next year in the Forest of Dean.

If you search Mike John's pages on Rootsweb Monmouthshire marriages you'll find an awful lot of HATTONs who came from FoD.

Happy hunting!

Marriage of Joseph Hatton and Sarah about 1800 (reply)

Thank you so much! I have been looking for this marriage for 30 years. Do you have a copy of the original register entry? I have been in touch with decendents from Canada and from the middle east and the UK. Are you in touch with jim hatton in Canada who has probably identified ancestors from Forthampton from 1545?

Thanks once again,

Marriage of Joseph HATTON and Sarah NELMES (reply)

Hi MPG

Sarah Nelmes is daughter of John NELMS (original spelling) and Margaret ? baptism 9 October 1785 according to FoD records. Sorry haven't delved further into the NELMES family as primarily following HATTONs and an elusive Elizabeth GEORGE (not sure if she's Monmouthshire or Gloucestershire). I would think that Sarah could be sibling of John as father's name is John.

Happy hunting!

Joseph HATTON (reply)

Thanks MPG,
had to look it up
"Larceny is a crime involving the wrongful acquisition of the personal property of another person."
Has now been replaced by the broader offence of theft.

Ah well, as I'm sure you all realised I was speaking in jest, but as some tabloid journalists used to say "why let the facts get in the way of a good story"...

Anyhow, returning to Joseph in Ruardean, it looks like we have the old story of several people in an area having same or similar names, so all rather muddy from our viewpoint. I was particularly interested as my father was a Jones of the Reddings part of Lydbrook/Ruardean, so I maywell be related to Elizabeth. That said I thought my line were more recent settlers to the area from South Wales, but again I've struggled with the large numbers of in my case William Jones' to untangle, so who's to say ?.

What's certain is yet again this thoroughly fascinating pasttime has thrown a new light on an area, until yesterday I don't recall coming across any Hattons in Ruardean, yet clearly they were a major "clan" in the area and probably still are. Rather like my mother's line of Brace & Merrick being so numerous in the Redmarley area.

Which Sarah ?. Father ?,perhaps John Hatton ?.

Similarly;
Record_ID: 40703
Entry_Number: 4393
Year: 1827
Month: Apr

Which Sarah ?. Father ?,perhaps Richard Hatton ?.

Again, why no parents mentioned ?
Record_ID: 40262
Entry_Number:
Year: 1810
Month: May
Day: 14
Surname: HATTEN
Forenames: Sarah
Parish_Chapel: Ruardean
Soundex: H350

SO TO CONCLUDE, THERE APPEAR TO BE SEVERAL CHILDREN FATHERED BY SARAH HATTON/HATTEN(s?) IN THIS AREA.
IT IS CLEARLY A COMPLEX WEB TO UNTANGLE, GOOD LUCK TO WHOEVER TRIES !.

I cannot find a logical burial for Elizabeth c1816 so cannot tell whether or why Joseph did marry again(to Sarah).
However searching Baptisms for Joseph Hatton there are, perhaps not surprisingly, more than one to consider wrt Elizabeth, Sarah et al;
1744 HATTON Joseph, William & Sarah, Ruardean
1776 HATTON Joseph, Jonathan & Alice, Ruardean
1784 HATTEN Joseph, Phillip & Jane, Ruardean
1802 HATTEN Joseph, Joseph & Betty, Ruardean

AND FINALLY, the Glos Archives site only shows one Joseph Hatton/Hatten in Dean;

http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Results.aspx

"1816 Hatton Joseph, St. Briavels, Ref: Q/Gc5/1, labourer, Gaol."

This Joseph is aged 30 when committed in 1816 so born abt 1786.
So he could be our man ?. Was he committed for bigamy ? Or maybe on suspicion, never proven, of murdering Elizabeth who had seemingly disappeared about then ?...

Probably neither of these, but ???...
