There are a number of Wills for Godwin's at Gloucester Archives that you might want to check out e.g.

1772 Richard Godwin St Briavels Will ref 1772/111 Catalog Wills 1541-1800
1772 Mary Joanna Godwin St Briavels Will ref 1772/32 Catalog 1541-1899

Also a Francis Godwin (no year stated unfortunately) down as a non conformist child. Ref d5533/1/1.

Thanks for that Mike. I still think this is the right Elizabeth Godwin burial, but it doesn't explain the arrival of William in 1832. Perhaps they got that date wrong as well and she died in childbirth in 1830?

So I think we have got back as far as we can on the Godwins haven't we?
Richard Godwin b 1740-1750 ish. Married Mary abt 1770.
