Is there more information contained in the Parish Records? (reply)

In addition to the reasons given for a false age, we must remember that in the periods of interest most people had to work their entire life, as there was not the pensions we have today. In order to get and keep a job it was sometimes necessary to claim an age younger than you were. My great grandfather stopped having birthdays after he reached 61. Every document that I have found for the period after he passed 61 has the same age ,61,even the census taken after he was in his seventies

Is there more information contained in the Parish Records? (reply)

Thank you for your responses! I always appreciate someone elses take on the information. Sometimes it's easy to overlook the obvious such as the person reporting the age at death not knowing her exact age.

Dates, memory and accuracy !!!! (reply)

The Census data for Sarah is 1795 - 1798 - its always possible that whoever reported the death / informed the Parish clerk was not sure of the real age or just confused !

Is there more information contained in the Parish Records? (reply)

The transcribed Parish Records we have contain all the information that was
recorded in the Parish Registers. Some parishes included more information in
their registers than others. If you have viewed a few of the records you will
notice the information in the registers varies depending who was the Vicar at
the time and generally you will find more information in later years.

In 1837 a civil registration system for births, marriages and deaths was
introduced in England and Wales. For events 1837 onwards certificates are
available which sometimes contain more details than the parish records, these
certificates are available from the authorities.

Past posting giving information on what information the certificates contain.
