Broadwell Memorial Hall (General)

by Colefordarea, Friday, November 01, 2013, 11:23 (3801 days ago)

Hello,
We at the Coleford Area Partnership are researching the history of the Broadwell Memorial Hall including the original trustees.

We are also researching about Amos William (and his descendants) who donated land for the hall to be built.

If anyone has any information we would be very grateful.

Thanks,
Coleford Area Partnership

Thanks for getting back so quickly.

I apologise as I forgot to mention what information on Amos we found, which includes what the two of you did, sorry.

Is it possible however for you to look at a trustees we have trouble finding information on called Benjamin Ellis? He was the longest surviving of the 'original trustees' and was also a colliery owner.

Thanks again.

on Curiousfox - May 2008, Coleford, Gloucestershire - the following message

'My great great grandfather was William BROWN, colliery proprietor; born around 1824 and married Arabella (or Allabella?) Census info says they were both born locally, but no record of their birth of marriage so far, still searching. Irish connection?

Son AMOS lived in WYNOLS HILL MASON in Broadwell, other children ARABELLA, FANNY, BENJAMIN, JANE and EMMA my great grandmother (died 1940) who married SAMUEL ELLIS, their son BENJAMIN my grandfather was a colliery owner in business with Benjamin BROWN.

This is very interesting, thanks MPGriffiths. There was a bit of confusion if there was a second Emma Brown as Amos also named a daughter Emma but this has cleared that up. What's also interesting is that Thomas Lewis, the father-in-law of Benjamin Ellis is also a name of another 'original trustee'.

Everything seems like it's correct about Thomas Lewis except his date of death which we have listed as 1928 not 1938, however this could just be an error on the document we have.

I think the burial of Thomas LEWIS in 1938 is the correct one - as his Widow's burial appears to have the same reference as Thomas.

Broadwell Memorial Hall

by Colefordarea, Friday, February 28, 2014, 09:53 (3682 days ago) @ Colefordarea

Hello again,
Just thought I'd let anyone know who's interested that we're having a World War 1 centenary event for Broadwell Memorial Hall, in which we hope to get more information on the soldiers and trustees as well to display what we have so far. We plan to have an event on the May Day Bank Holiday, more information can be found on the SunGreen website:
http://www.sungreen.co.uk/Broadwell/broadwell_memorial_hall_gsv.html

If anyone is unsure if they had a relative involved with the Memorial Hall I'll add a list of names on my next post. We're looking more for photos and stories if possible rather than census or parish information. If anyone has anything they want to share before the date we be more than happy to include it on our display.

If your unclear on anything just ask.

Thanks,
David

Hi David,
will you be advertising this event, and requesting material, in the local papers etc ?. I ask as my sister and family live in Coalway and would probably like to attend if they know about it.
Also, she works at Coalway School so is possibly in a good position to try and help gain interest via the pupils - have you considered approaching such groups, I'm sure the schools will be talking about WW1 in lessons, they certainly are in this area(West London) ??

Good luck, Jeff.

Hey Jeff,

Yeah we have a letter in the Review asking for information and plan on having a request in the other local papers.
Haven't considered contacting groups like school to generate interest though its a great idea.
Only really now trying to spread the word now we've reached a certain point in our research and so not much advertising has been done so far.

Hi David, I have photos of my Grandfather Benjamin Martin Brown & Great Uncle Amos William Brown.
Amos donated the ground the hall was built on and both were Trustees.
I have legal documents (copies not very clear) of the transfer deeds.
I realise this thread goes back some years, but I have only started my research within the last couple.
Not sure how I can upload the photos on this forum ?
My Father Gilbert Benjamin Brown was youngest sibling of Benjamin and was a Free Miner (I have his actual certificate) as all the male members of the family.
Are you still in the Coleford area?
Hope this will be of some help,
Yours Roger
