1834 Samuel Manns & 1838 Eliza Cole/1839 Mary Ann Stephens (General)

by Ladies, Tuesday, October 30, 2018, 14:00 (1997 days ago)

I have the above in my husbands FAmily Tree. Eliza Manns died in 1866 and Samuel Manns remarried to Mary Ann Stephens(Stevens)

I cannot find this family in any 1881 Census including any children and there were numerous children from both marriages.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

The Manns family just don't seem to be on the 1881 census; I've been looking for sometime as they are also in my family. I have checked all sites (A......y, FMP and Fs) with various spelling combinations of their name and with wildcards to no avail.

My rather quicker search rather confirms your thoughts Caroleigh.
Tried searching various family members using FamilySearch (and limited access to FMP & Ancestry), especially the youngest but no luck, either in Dymock area or anywhere else. Definitely looks like they are missing off the 1881, the only MANNS family I can find in the area is;

1881
Dymock, Gloucestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
William Manns Head M 31 Farm Labourer. Newent, Gloucestershire, England
Eliza Manns Wife F 27 Dymock, Gloucestershire, England
Emaley Manns Daughter F 5 Dymock, Gloucestershire, England
Charles Manns Son M 4 Dymock, Gloucestershire, England
Annie Manns Daughter F 2 Dymock, Gloucestershire, England

Just for the record and as you know here's Samuel and family in other years; hard to imagine they moved away during 1881 but not impossible they were off "visiting" of course.

1871
Event Place Dymock, Gloucestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Samuel Manns Head M 36 Ag lab. Kempley, Gloucestershire
Mary Ann Manns Wife F 32 Linton, Herefordshire
Clara Manns Daughter F 12 Dymock, Gloucestershire
George Stephens Son-in-law M 9 Dymock, Gloucestershire
Anne Stephens Daughter F 6 Dymock, Gloucestershire
Martha Manns Daughter F 3 Dymock, Gloucestershire
Eleanor Manns Daughter F 1 Dymock, Gloucestershire

1891
Notts Place, Kempley, Gloucestershire, England
Household Role Sex Age Birthplace
Samuel Manns Head M 57 Ag lab. Gloucestershire, England
Mary A Manns Wife F 52 Gloucestershire, England
Elisa Manns Daughter F 17 General Servant Domestic. Gloucestershire, England
Mary Manns Daughter F 14 Gloucestershire, England
Henry Manns Son M 10 Gloucestershire, England
Ensley S Manns Son M 5 Gloucestershire, England

The family were definitely in Dymock either side of the 1881 census;

Moving on, have you tried finding their neighbours in the 1871 and 1891 census' ?
Then try searching for these same neighbours and /or address in the 1881 - my guess is they won't be found, suspect that sheet of the Census no longer exists, but worth trying all the same.

Hi Jeff
Thanks for taking a look for this lost family. I did check to see if the other families were missing and can confirm that they are all apart for the Taylor family who moved to Oxenall.

Thanks again

Thank you Jeff.

Perhaps that is the answer, that for some reason that particular page of the Census is missing

Thank you all for replying. It would appear that most of this family disappeared in 1881 which seems very bizarre. They were on the census either side of 1881 which suggests that they did not move out of the area until by 1901 when they moved to Gloucester which is not far.

Also, it does not seem possible that the whole family would be out somewhere on the day that the Census was taken?

The mystery goes on --
