William Henry Steele HARRISON/Susannah? (reply)

That does make more sense than the William Henry Harrison born in in Cardiff at 1800 as that would be William Harrisons son.

And as Mary is on that census it makes sense for her to be Mary Steel born 1772 so being 89 in 1861 is about right. Leaving WHS harrison to be the son of thomas 1775 and mary steel. Strange that we have the other children, neville elmes, thomas samuel, elmes edward and eliza amelia but no Willam H S Harrison on birth record though.

A lot of my research I have done on find my past, but lots of these census results do not appear on there so not sure what I am doing wrong. I did find a William Harrison born Merthyr 1801 on an 1861 census who is down as a visitor, possibly visiting his daughter Mary 'jardan' born merthyr 1830, may not be a link.

Thanks, I can tell you certinly know what your doing with all this, the connections you are finding are very impressive.

Elmes Edward Richard HARRISON - born 1805 (reply)

Hi everyone, I have just had another good read of all the posts above, my previous response sent late last night was a bit rushed as I was still trying to get my head round all the names and links, it was a little confusing.

From what I can see this does look very promising, I need to get it all down on paper and figure it all out, but I do think you are on to something, especially with the locations over in West Wales.

Previously we had been chasing Williams but for you to follow Thomas appears the way to go. I am not sure if there will be concrete proof linking them all together but will definitely concentrate on this route.

Thanks for all the time and effort you have obviously put in so far, we really appreciate it.

I will post some updates with anything else I come across.

Many thanks

Elmes Edward Richard HARRISON - born 1805 (reply)

Many thanks all for your responses. The current position is that William Harrison born 1773 registered the baptism of Maynard Harrison in St Ishmaels as stated above. William married a Charlotte Mabbett in Coleford Gloster in 1796 and at the time gave his residence as Penmark which is in the Vale outside Cardiff. Why he was in the Kidwelly area we don't know. William and Maynard then move to the Merthyr area nd are there from about 1807' with Willam dying and being buried in St. John's church merthyr. I have been able to trace Maynard and his descendants, but am having problems with Williams parents. I have no knowledge of his parents names or where he was born.
In summary he was born 1773, ascertained from the 1841 census in which he gives his age as 68, provided that he knew his birthdate!!!
He gave Penmark as his place of residence when he married in 1797 at Coleford.
In 1800 he had two children baptised in Cardiff area and Maynard was baptised in st Ishmaels in 1807.
Then moved to Merthyr and had further children baptised in Merthyr, Harriet,Ricard and Louisa, and died in 1847 at Merthyr.
It is possible he is originally from Gloster but I have nothing to evidence that fact, so if anyone can add anything I would be grateful.

Elmes Edward Richard HARRISON - born 1805 (reply)

Searching on findmypast, I found a Laugharne (CMN) baptism for Elmes Edward HARRISON dated 1 September 1805 (date of birth is recorded as 11 August the same year), son of Thomas Harrison, Gent and Mary his wife. There is also an Eliza Amelia Maria, born 22 February 1807 and baptised 9 March 1807 to the same parents.

Laugharne is, as the crow flies across the estuary, only a couple of miles from St Ishmael, where on 9 August 1807 Maynard Colchester HARRISON, son of Mr William Harrison, was baptised.

William HARRISON 1771 Newnham ? (reply)

On 11/01/1797 a William Harrison married Charlotte Mabbett, who was the daughter of Jane Colchester originating from Westbury Court. The marriage took place at Newnham Parish Coleford. At the time of the marriage Harrisons residence was shown as Penmark nr Cardiff and they subsequently moved to Merthyr where both later passed away, leaving several children. Enquiries show that William Harrison may in fact have been born in the Gloucester area. I have been unable to trace William Harrison back any further than the marriage in 1797. Can anyone help?
It is possible that his mother was named Emily. There is a family grave in the Merthyr area where an Emily Harrison is buried on 03/02/1826 aged 78. This would give her a birthdate approx 1748. I believe William to have been born 1773(possibly 1776)
Any help on either Harrison would be gratefully received. Thanks
