Private William Ewart BRICK 1889 - 1915 R.I.P. (reply)

Thanks Slowhands for reminding me to also consider the Severn link when searching possible relatives to the residents of Blakeney and the like, I wonder if the other W.Bricks I saw at Gloucester were also linked thus ?. How sad William left six daughters, perhaps one of these was at Blakeney. Certainly, of the thirteen BRICK PRs within this site's database eight were at Westbury On Severn in the mid 1800s...

Pte W.E. Brick is named on the Upton-On-Severn War Memorial, see photos here.

Dink, in case you wern't aware, for possible future reference the key details of both these men, and too many more, may be obtained free-of-charge from the excellent Commonwealth War Graves Commission website

May both these brave men, and their comrades, Rest In Peace.

I would be grateful if some one else would take a look for this soldier and any connection to Blakeney. I think his surname might be incorrect and could be BRICE, if so, then he perhaps he is Jonathan Walter BRICE

The details printed in the Gloucester Journal 11 Sept. 1915 are as follows

Killed at the Dardanelles

News has been received at Blakeney of the death of Private W. BRICK, killed in recent fighting in the Dardanelles. The gallant soldier, who was 27 years of age, emigrated to Australia some 7 years ago, and came over to Egypt with the first Australian contingent. He had been only 4 days in the trenches when he received the fatal wound. His parents as might be imagined are greatly distressed at the loss of their only son. There are 6 daughters living.

Private W. BRICK/BRICE? Blakeney? WW1 (reply)

Hi Dink,
I suspect you already know this, but despite a fair number of W.BRICKS (mostly William's) being born in Gloucester city during the late 1800s, searching FreeBMD & GlosBMD gives NO births registered for the Westbury area at all. The nearest likely "possible" is a William Brick born Merthyr Tydfil June 1887 who could conceivably be known within the Blakeney area by 1915 or so. However there are NO further Records for the area long after 1915. Similarly there are NO W.Brick PRs whatsoever within the FoD PRs database at any date.

To again repeat what you probably already know a Pte JW Brice is listed within the Roll Of Honour of the Adelaide Advertiser newspaper. This online edition is dated 22 May 1916, but I think I'm right in thinking this was an ongoing Roll that this paper updated thro the War, Pte Brice's entry isn't dated perhaps suggesting it wasn't recent news ?.
At first I took the title "170th" as a reference to an Army Unit, now I see it's clearly the 170th update to the List !, and "only" halfway thro the War, very sad indeed.
