c.13th or 14th century stone pub on the road leading to Clearwell Caves. The Butchers Arms is still successfully trading. There is a skittle alley in the rear garden. The Butchers Arms was once a rare Gloucestershire outlet for Lloyds Cambrian Ales of Newport.

COLEFORD
(Plume of) Feathers Inn, 30 Market Place GL16 8AA
The Plume of Feathers was open in 1654 and possibly even before that. Ray Allen wrote in the Forest Review newspaper (Sept.1998) about Coleford pubs and, of the Feathers Inn, he says: "It was sold in 1672 by Stirley Kedgwin Snr. to Richard and Mary Sladden, the latter being Kedgwin’s daughter. It was acquired by the Hall family of Highmeadow who rented it in 1769 out at 1s.6d. weekly. Henry Jenkins bought the inn from Lord Gage when he wound up the family's local estate that century. But in 1827 Jenkins was bankrupt and sent to prison.”

The Butchers Arms is in Clearwell a couple of miles from Coleford, visit
pubinnguide.com for more details. My maternal family are from around Coleford,
my uncle, Joseph Barnfield-Hale was landlord of 'The Feathers' in the 1960s,
I recall it was originally called 'The Plume of Feathers'. I was in Coleford this weekend and was horrified to see the state of 'The Feathers'. It was a great meeting place for various Forest 'Lodges', I've lots of happy memories of the place.
