St. Louis MO (reply)

Excellent. An expert in Workman family history.

My grandfather (Charles George Lewis) had two cousins, both of whom became medical doctors, who emigrated to the area around St. Louis MNO. I never thought to ask my Aunt Floss from which family (Workman, Virgo, Lewis, Clarke or Davies( they came from. Does that ring any bells on the Workman side?

Post Script:
As it turns out, they were Vinings, from Somerset by way of Garndiffaith.

Jesse WORKMAN 1776 Coaley / Dursley - children?? (reply)

Thanks for the information from the Gloucestershire Burial Index on Eleanor and Jesse Workman's burials.

I am interested in the children you mention. According to my information Jesse and Eleanor had a daughter Eliza Ann or Elizabeth christened at Cam either 6 Feb 1799 (parish register) or 9 Feb 1799 (IGI). I also have another 5 christened up to 1812. Your two were new to me - as you can see from my reference to IGI, my data was copied a long time ago so I can't remember when and how I got it (my own research or information sent by other researchers). I assume that their first daughter must have died if they were christening another daughter with the same name in 1817. I'm puzzled as to how we could have missed these extra 2 children.

For more information on the family you can see my web site at -
https://sites.google.com/site/workmanfamilygloucestershire/

(I see the page including Jesse and Elanor's family is missing so I'll have to put that back)

William LEWIS death abt 1881 to 1884 (reply)

After searching for 27 years to find my unaccounted for great grandfather, William Lewis, Slowhands found a very promising lead. Family lore holds that William, a 31 year old native of Hirwaun, died when my grandfather, Charles George LEWIS was an infant or toddler. Supposedly, William died of caisson's disease during the construction of the Severn Tunnel. His wife, Mary Ann LEWIS nee CLARKE was living at herf parents' home, Box Tree Cottage, then New Road, Blakeney at the time. In the 1881 census she and the children are in Blakeney and William is with his parents in Hirwaun.

I finally received the death certificate for the William Lewis whose death Slowhands found~nd whose info seemed promising. Alas, this William was a seaman whose death was registered at his home but who died of asthma in the US. The name and age matched but I can't see family history as being that inaccurate. Past details (marriage at Viney Hill, census, etc) list him as a collier or coal rider.

Anyone have any suggestions of what I should do next? I have reviewed all the probate register indices for everything from 1880 (the year before his youngest son's birth) to 1891 when his widow remarried.

William LEWIS 1850 Aberdare (reply)

This is truly amazing. You've made more progress in two days 5than I had made in literally decades.

The first census record for Ruth is a red herring. Her birth name is Davies and she was born at Llanfrynach.

You've solved a lesser mystery for me in that I never knew how the Workman's were related other than that they were cousins . . . My mother remembered posting packages "home" to them but only remembered the address as something something something (she remembered the cadence but not the actual placenames) near Pontypool.

Thanks again (although the word seems inadequate to express my gratitude for your kind help.

William LEWIS 1850 Aberdare (reply)

Thank you again for the additional info. I had found that same census info, and I am assuming it is the correct family, based on the fact that it matches William's birth certificate. I think the best way for me to confirm it is probably to order a copy of Lewis Lewis' birth certificate, and if the info there matches William's I'll know for certain that this is my family.

Through probate sources, etc. I discovered the elder William's death information, and Ruth's, who was living with Edward in her later, widowed years.

I hadn't thought of the Newport death, Newport meaning nothing to me in relation to family place names (Trevethin, Hirwaun, Blakeney, Cardiff, etc). There's a William listed in the probate records, he's listed as a gentleman and left a sizable estate so I thought that excluded the Newport William. A bit of research tonight revealed that a William died in Newport at age 78 in the previous quarter, so you have given me an exciting lead. I shall order the certificate and hope for the best.

I will be happy when William is no longer "lost". Obviously, since I began this search at 16 it's always been a compelling mystery for me, but since being widowed myself it seems that much more important. I would like to think that my children will know something more of their Dada and won't ever need to search to discover who he was or where he was laid to rest.

I really cannot convey how thankful I am to you for finding this info. In '83 I found all the Cadogan family history really easily in the Glos registry office, since the name isn't quite as ubiquitous . . .

Thanks.

Sandra

Decompression illness (reply)

If family history is accurate he didn't die in the tunnel itself since the bends doesn't present until after the atmospheric pressure has changed. I didn't know where he might have gone before symptoms presented, but did hear that he was in agony wh3en he went and that it was a blessing that his suffering ended.

Well the Severn Tunnel flooded several times during its construction and divers were used to assess / start the repairs - so its possible that a number of decompression sickness / illnesses may have presented in the construction teams.

Charles LEWIS 1881 Blakeney / Viney Hill (reply)

I can't thank you enough for4 all the information. I had a great deal of it but I didn't know when Mary Ann and John were married. "George" in the census is indeed my grandfather but I hadn't heard that anyone ever called him by his middle name. A surprise in 1983 was that Uncle Jim's name was really Thomas . .

I never thought to look in Newport . . .the family moved a good bit, in the area of Pontypool, in Cardiff, and always retuning to Box Tree Cottage and the Forest. During the 1881 census I believe William was in Hirwaun with his parents, working with his father in a pit there as a coal rider.

My brother didn't remember much of the story other than William was 32 when he died. I don't think I had heard that until last week, but it fits with Charlie being a babt if the William who died in Newport was the correct William.I

If family history is accurate he didn't die in the tunnel itself since the bends doesn't present until after the atmospheric pressure has changed. I didn't know where he might have gone before symptoms presented, but did hear that he was in agony wh3en he went and that it was a blessing that his suffering ended.

I put his death between 1881 and 1884 so the death in Newport certainly fits. I'll send for the record and hope that solves the mystery! (Please excuse the typing ~~ I'm using my phone with its impossibly small keyboard to send this.

Thanks again.

Trying to narrow events down using Census info :-

Who is George Lewis born 1883 ? - is George Charles' middle name ? is he William's son ?

The Tunnel was built between 1873 and 1886

Could this narrow Williams death down to 1882 - 1886 timeframe ?

William LEWIS Viney Hill

My great grandfather, William Lewis, was born in Hirwaun (Aberdare) in 1850. He married my great-grandmother, Mary Ann Clarke of Box Tree Cottage, the New Road, near Blakeney on December 25, 1872 at All Saints Church, Viney Hill. My grandfather, Charles, was born at Box Tree Cottage in 1881.

Family history suggests William died of Caisson's Disease during the construction of the Severn Tunnel (when my grandfather was an infant or toddler), but I have been unable to find any supporting documentation for this, or his burial site.

Mary Ann, her second husband, John James, and her mother, Sarah Ann (nee Vining) are all buried at All Saints, Viney Hill, but I have not been able to find William.

I began my search for him 27 years ago, taking buses and riding my bike from registration district to registration district. The vicar was kind enough to allow me to look through the register at All Saints, so I have seen William's signature on his wedding certificate, and I have his birth certificate, as well as my grandfather's.

At 21 I returned, hoping to put flowers on the graves of the ancestors left behind when my mother's generation settled firmly in Canada and the States. My grandmother had recently passed away and was feeling guilty about not having agreed to return home with my grandfather when he wanted to do so, and I promised her I would find a way to honor them.

I searched through as many cemetaries in Hirwaun and Aberdare as I could, and I have checked the death indices and burial records, but have met with scant success. It's as if he vanished into thin air. . . It's now all these years later, my children are small, my husband deceased and I doubt I will be able to find the time to visit the area to continue my search any time in the near future.

If anyone can offer me any advice on where else I could search for any information on William's death or burial, I would be most grateful for the help.

This whole effort would probably be more simple if my ancestors weren't all named Lewis, Clarke, and Davies . . .
