Extract from 1841 Enumerator's Directions:

"Write the age of every person under 15 years of age as it is stated to you. For persons aged 15 years and upwards, write the lowest of the term of 5 years within which the age is.

20 years and under 25 write 20
25 years and under 30 write 25
30 years and under 35 write 30
65 years and under 70 write 65
70 years and under 75 write 70

If no more can be ascertained respecting the age of any person than that the person is a child or is grown up, write 'under 20,' or 'above 20,' as the case may be."

That might have been the instructions - but..... I have seen ages go up, go down, accurate and wildly wrong :-)

WOW, WOW, WOW.

Just a very quick reply, but thank you so much. There is so much information here it is going to take me some time to digest it and look in fine detail to what you have found. I didn't know about rounding up birth dates on the 1841 census, that's really interesting, and the LDS site I have NEVER used, again very interesting.

I what to write more but I what to look at all the information, I know very childish.

Thank you so much again.

Kind regards

Sarah JAMES nee JONES 1804 - 1889 Clearwell (reply)

Thanks S for finding this Sarah, not sure why I didn't see her in the 1881 Census but v pleased you did, for first time ever I even started dreaming about this hunt last night.
However please advise whether you think this IS "our" Sarah, or just one of the possibles, as clearly it's not a rare name locally at all ?.
I've just re-searched Births for a Sarah Jones born abt 1800-1810, on this site, GlosArchives Non Conformists site, & LDS. However there's no clear birth/baptism in the West Dean area that I can see despite there being quite a few possibles with father Thomas, especially if going over the border especially into Herefds etc.

These are the contenders from this site's PRs:

1043710 1798 JONES Sarah, Thomas & Margaret, Dixton
179780 1800 JONES Sarah, [not stated] & Priscilla, Penalt Penallt Monmouth
375332 1800 JONES Sarah, not stated & Margaret, Ledbury
72000 1803 JONES Sarah, Thomas & Sarah, Newent
391147 1803 JONES Sarah, Thomas & Pherina, Much Marcle
422981 1808 JONES Sarah, Thomas & Elizabeth, Monmouth

I've not searched all of these for likely subsequent marriages but I saw one last night that may fit the Newent one & personally I favour the Monmouth/Dixton ones.
Do you agree these warrant further research to hopefully whittle down further ?.

All the best, Jeff

Secondly I am now a little stuck.

I am trying to find information on a Sarah Jones, born 1806 in Newland.

She was married to Thomas Dorrington (also spelt Darington) 4 March 1827
She was married to Thomas James 19 July 1854
Father was Thomas Jones, Carpenter

I have looked though the records of all Sarah Jones' born 1805-1807 with a father Thomas and found nothing. If anyone has information on either Sarah or her father that would be fantastic.

Sarah JAMES nee JONES 1804 - 1889 Clearwell (reply)

Searching when & where she dies may help ?

1. From this thread it appears Sarah James nee Jones dies after the 1871 Census but before the 1881. I've searched hard for her on the 1881, using both LDS and Ancestry's Free 1881 Search, but no luck.
Thinking if still living she'd be with son Jacob Dorrington, I've also thoroughly searched the 1881 for him, also wife Ruth Dorrington. However I cannot find either, I wonder if due to a poor transcription of Dorrington ????

If you can find them perhaps you'll find Sarah, if not it may still help give a clue as to Sarah's place of death, and be a valuable part of this tree.

Sarah JAMES nee JONES dies ???? (reply)

Sarah DORRINGTON nee JONES c1800s Newland (reply)

Hi Alex,
Thanks for saying you've been using the site & forum to build your tree. You therefore probably know there are quite a few Sarah Jones' born to Thomas' in the early 1800s within possible reach of the Newland area. Do you have Ancestry etc access ?. I don't, but searching for her using the excellent LDS site (LatterDay Saints aka FamilySearch) gives several Sarahs born 1800-1810, especially if you consider she may be from across the nearby Wye into Wales, likely I think given her father's name.
https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Asarah%...

I use this span of birthdate as I think your 1805-1807 date is too narrow. From another post on this thread is a summary of her Census details:

West Dean census: 1841 Sarah "35" - see below
West Dean census: 1851 Sarah 49 so born abt 1802
West Dean census: 1861 Sarah 55 so born abt 1806
West Dean census: 1871 Sarah 70 so born abt 1801

As you can see Sarah's given age so birthdate varies rather a lot which is not helpful eg from the 1841 she's born abt 1806, but by the 1851 it's 1802 !.
However during the 1841 Census, adult's ages were rounded to the nearest 5yrs. http://www.uk1841census.com/intro.php
So during the 1841 Census her actual given age may have been 33 to 38, say, which gives an actual birthdate from 1803 to 1808.
For later Census' they recorded the exact GIVEN age, unfortunately this often varied particularly with ladies...
In my experience some lady's given ages tended to be artifically lower when they were actually abt 50, yet even older as they became 70 or so. In this respect wrt the 1851 Census, I'd guess she was quite probably already 50 when claiming to be 49.

Based on this judgement personally I'd consider births as early as 1802 as "possibles" for your Sarah.

So, sorry, not a great aid to finding "your" Sarah's birth amongst the possibles, but I thought I should mention this unhelpful fact anyhow wrt the 1841 Census.
I hope it's some assistance, maybe from your previous searches you found an "almost possible" born outside your 1805-1807 who maybe deserves reconsidering, I do hope so.

atb Jeff

Sarah DORRINGTON nee JONES cicra 1806 Newland (reply)

Firstly like to say this is my first posting (about requesting help) and I have found a lot of information on this site/forum and made contact with a family relative too.

Kind regards
