Malson Family . . (reply)

Hi Dan,
On a visit to Drybrook churchyard last month found a gravestone for Richard Malson died 20 Nov 1923 age 90 and Naomi Malson born 29 May 1931 died 11 Sept 1913.

Think this may be the Richard you are looking for. I have him as the son of Thomas Malson and Hannah (Gregory). On this site found a baptism at Mitcheldean Congregational 13 Mar 1833 for Richard Melsom son of Thomas and Hannah which I think might well fit given the age at death of 90 which would make the year of birh 1833.

I couldn't find a burial record for a Richard Malson for 1876 age 40 but did find a burial 23 Oct 1867 for a Richard Malson age 40 at Mitcheldean. This would make the year of birth c1827 and I think would make him the son of John Malson and Sarah (Platt).

Hope this is of some help

Regards

Sorry Dan,

I gave you duff info - I realised after checking my files that I got the John Malson 1539 baptism from the IGI website - not this one... I should have checked the sources before rambling on - sorry! I have to say though, that I have collected a lot of the IGI info over the last 6 years and as the FOD website is being updated, it very closely correlates (sometimes the dates are out by exactly one year on the very old records where the different calendars are used) and so in my very humble opinion, the IGI seems to be a pretty trustworthy source with regards to the Malson/Malsom family from Gloucestershire ;-)

Again, apologies that I misled you...

Malson Family (reply)

Hello all,

I am looking to find the birth cert. / baptism for Richard Malson, marriage resord below but I can't find any record of birth. Richard is a son of Thomas Malson (as per below). The ony Richard (son of Thomas) I can find was born in 1804 and another in 1806, both born to Thomas and Sarah however this would mean Richard was 49 when he married Naomi, she was born in 1831. Whilst it's possible, I think it's unlikely as there are resords of Richard and Naomi having children up to 1875 which would make Richard 69. Possible but unlikely.

Record_ID: 13654
Entry_Number: 183
Year: 1855
Month: Sep
Day: 30
Grooms_Surname: MALSON
Grooms_Forenames: Richard
Grooms_Age: Full
Groom_Condition: Bachelor
Grooms_Occupation: collier
Grooms_Residence: Dry Brook
Grooms_Fathers_Surname: Malson
Grooms_Fathers_Forenames: Thomas
Grooms_Fathers_Occupation: labourer
Brides_Surname: PARKER
Brides_Forenames: Naomi
Brides_Age: full
Brides_Condition: Widow

I have found a burial recorded for Richard Malson in 1876, died at age 40 which I think is more likely to be the right person but still not able to find evidence of a birth circa 1835/6.

Any assistance appreciated.

Regards

Malson family . . . (reply)

Hi Kerri,

I can't remember the Maltese link but I have been doing some more digging and have come accross a Malsen (Van Malsen) in the twelth century. My thought, as Malson is not a typical English name, is that it's an English development of a foreign name. IE English will coloquilise (?) 'sen' to 'son' as it would be their assumption of spelling upon hearing the name. I'll include below some info that I've been sent on the earliest mention of the 'Malsen' version :

Message from someone I contacted ref. Malsen (Van Malsen): I have one Hermann van Malsen (von would be German, whereas van is Dutch/Flemish). Cuijck is the name of a village, so it's possible Malsen was too. Malsen's father's surname of Kempengau suggests a German origin, even though he was born in the Netherlands; German nouns ending in 'gau tend to refer to a region or district. Specifically he was 'Graf im Kempengau' or 'Count in the Kempen region.' Kempen is a town in NW Westphalia in Germany, but there is also a Dutch-Belgian region, usually referred to as Campine:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Campine
I tend towards the Belgian-Dutch view, but it's possible I took the info from a German website.
There is a Dutch castle called Huis van Malsen:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maasdriel
But when you click on it, it takes you to the region of Maasdriel in Drenthe in the eastern Netherlands, which would place it right next to Germany.
This following link has some info in Dutch:
http://www.benvanrijswijk.com/genealogie/malsen2.htm
I don't really read Dutch, but the gist seems to be that the van Malsen surname was still around in the 1230s.

In the meantime, thanks for your info. and although I can find Malsons back for several hundred years I haven't managed yet to link them ! I'm sure you are a lot further on that me !

I'll take a look at your suggestions and will let you know if I manage to find anything that may be of interest to you.

Regards

Dan

Malson family . . . (reply)

Hi Dan,

Congratulations on getting so far back in your family tree - I'm very envious! The earliest Malson/Malsom I have been able to directly link to is John Malson ~1660 - 1670 - despite narrowing down possible parents, I have 2 very good fits left, which means I have probably hit a brick wall.

The earliest Malson I have managed to find has been a John Malson baptism 1/8/1539, Westbury-on-Severn.. on this website - there are many more that should help you. Not all the records have been uploaded (although thanks to the generosity of the volunteers there aren't that many records left!), you can check these on the website through the Parish Records tab, just in case your parish isn't updated yet...

There is also a database on the Gloucester Record Office website that could be useful to you, lists records by date for wills, non-conformist records etc... it is a very reasonable service to order copies and have them sent to you too - I am just working my way through 14 wills - earliest Joseph 1672 so probably no help to you - and doesn't look too promising for my search either ;-) I live in Australia and for all the copies and the postage it cost 44 pounds... The reason I mention this as a possible avenue for you is that I can see wills on the search for mid 16th century (one is a Richard, will date 1559).

As for the name articles, I am intrigued - did you get these online? I have looked online and through many reference books and can't seem to find an explanation (all my other surnames are there, just this one is proving elusive). Did you look at 'Malson' or other spelling variations.. e.g 'Mawlson, Maulson" etc...

Good luck in your investigations :)

Kerri

Malson family . . .

Good Afternoon All,

Looking into the Malson family history and can see there were plenty of them listed in Parish records back to 16/17 hundreds.

The earliest Malson record I can find is a death cert. for "Ricus Malson" from 1597 but nothing before that.

Are there any Malsons that have successfully traced the line back to here (Ricus) or even before ?

I have read different 'articles' on the origins of the name claiming it to be various origins from Maltese to German and would really like to know the actual origins if possible ?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Regards

Dan Malson
