JAMES - Elmore - 2nd Dragoon Guards (reply)

There is an old message of Rootschat - re: James HYETT from Huntley born 1773

1793-1814 - who served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queens Bay) - as a Sergeant - same troop as your Joseph JAMES and the same year enlisting i.e.1793

The contributor found the military information on James Hyett from the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards website

http://www.qdg.org.uk

'James Hyett enlisted as a Private in 1793. On the muster roll he was first sent with the Queens Bays to Flanders which I understand is the Flanders Campaign where they fought against the French revolutionary forces.

After this the Queens Bays on James' records and on the QDG website seem to show no more fighting actions. The next report of battle by QDG is Waterloo. From 1807 there was the Peninsular War but the Queens Bays were not included in the fight against Napoleon.

…..

Prior to this James and the Queens Bays were stationed in Ireland from Mar 1803 to quell the rebellion and riots led by Robert Emmet. The Queens Bays were in Ireland for nearly three years.

In 1811 James was transferred to the 11th Veterans until he was discharged in 1814 on disbandment of the 11th Veterans etc etc.'

1851 Census Huntley

Common

James HYETT 78 - Pensioner, born Glos. Huntley
Susan HYETT - 74 - born Norfolk, N.K. (nee LADLE - Public Members Tree Ancestry)

JAMES - Elmore (reply)

Thank you, I have all of that except their possible first child Frederick James in Chatham. If the military record for "Clomore" rather than Elmore is his, then he served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards-5th Royal Veteran Battalion 1793-1816. But from my limited research, towards the end of his career the Veteran Battalion was serving at home quelling troubles here therefore allowing his marriage and first child.
Serving in the military does of course explain why Joseph a Quedgeley man married in Canterbury, and Delilah's sister Clarinda and son George (who was to marry Fanny Jane Acton) ended-up in Gloucestershire and not Kent when her husband "disappeared".

Clomore, Gloucestershire??? (reply)

Hi Fozzy,
after searching the net and studying maps old and new, as I'm sure you've already done, I can't see anywhere in your area called Clomore. In fact I can't see such a place anywhere in the UK, or Clomoor either, but no doubt there may be such a place, if only Clomore Farm etc.
So in this instance I certainly suspect you're correct and it's a transcript error. Think you'll have to be "patient" and hope FMP get a scan.

I did wonder if you could get a scan from the National Archives site, however it appears that they also refer you to FMP.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierupto191...

If by some misfortune a scan isn't forthcoming perhaps you can view it in-person at the NA, or probably best to try the Hospital website itself ?.

Clomore, Gloucestershire??? (reply)

I am researching James Markey Acton of Longhope (my x2 great grandfather) and his lineage.
His father-in-law Joseph James' death certificate states he was an "out pensioner, Royal Hospital, Chelsea".
Looking for military records I've found a "Joseph James" with the correct birth year but in "Clomore, Gloucestershire"... he was born in Quedgeley, next door to Elmore.
Has anybody come across a Clomore in Gloucestershire or would it be fair to assume it's a miss-transcription of Elmore?
I cannot see the actual scan of the record as "Findmypast" have linked it to the wrong record... I am awaiting their response.

I know this is strictly outside the Forest but there is a - tenuous - link.

James Markey ACTON born 1812 in Longhope (reply)

Can anyone match up Joseph Acton, of Longhope (born circa 1745) with the earlier Acton family of Longhope? I have set out a tentative tree below, starting with Henry Acton, of Longhope, 4th son of Humphrey Acton, of Burton, Worcestershire and his wife Alice Cooksey. According to the Visitation of Worcestershire Humphrey Acton was a descendant of Sir Roger Acton, of Sutton, Worcestershire, a famous Lollard and favourite of King Henry IV who gave him a robe made of cloth of gold, executed for heresy in January 1414.

Henry Acton, of Longhope, Gloucestershire and Surdham, Hampshire, married Alice Read, daughter of John Read, of Longhope, and died 1631, having had issue,

1a Elizabeth Acton, baptised at Longhope 26 May 1599, and married William
Tyler, of Michelldeane, leaving issue.

2a Alicia Acton, baptised at Longhope 4 October 1600, and married Thomas Nurse,
leaving issue.

3a Avice Acton, baptised at Longhope 20 May 1602, and married John Woodward,
leaving issue.

 4a William Acton, see below.

5a Anne Acton, baptised at Longhope 13 June 1606.

The only son,

William Acton, born 1604, matriculated Brasenose College, Oxford 24 October 1623, and had issue,

 1a Henry Acton, see below.

The only son,

Henry Acton, living 1631, possibly ancestor of,

 1a Francis Acton, see below.

His possible descendant,

Francis Acton, of Longhope, married at Longhope 30 March 1730 Sarah Cox, and had issue,

1a Eunice Acton, baptised at Longhope 13 June 1731.

2a Francis Acton, baptised at Longhope 26 August 1733.

3a Mary Acton, baptised at Blaisdon, Gloucestershire 2 November 1735.

 4a George Acton, see below.

 (5a?) Joseph Acton, see below.

The elder son,

George Acton, of Longhope, baptised at Blaisdon 30 July 1736, married first Sarah, and had issue,

1f John Acton, baptised at Longhope 19 September 1762.

2f George Acton, baptised at Longhope 5 January 1764.

3f Lois Acton, baptised at Longhope 26 January 1766.

4f Samuel Acton, baptised at Longhope 1 May 1768.

5f Eunice Acton, baptised at Longhope 3 January 1773.

6f Catherine Acton, baptised at Longhope 25 July 1779.

(cont) George Acton, of Longhope, married second Rosanna, and had issue

7f Joseph Acton, baptised at Longhope 9 February 1783.

The possible younger son,

Joseph Acton, of Longhope, born at Longhope circa 1745, married at Longhope 13 April 1764 Anna Watkins, and died at Longhope 1806, having had issue,

1a Charles Acton, of Longhope, baptised at Longhope 12 March 1769, married
at Longhope 11 July 1811 Anne Markey (born circa 1791), daughter of Richard
Markey and his wife Anne, and died at Longhope 1850, leaving issue.

Thank you for the dates of the Actons. We have been to Longhope Church recently, I may have signed the visitor book, I can't remember, must be getting old!!!

I don't know what the relationship is between Benjamin and Joseph Malsom, if any. I believe Joseph's parents were William and Mary, while Benjamin's were William and Anne.

Best wishes

Esther

James Markey ACTON born 1812 in Longhope (reply)

Hi Esther

Here are the dob's you wanted:

Joseph Charles Acton born 8 April 1837
Maria Acton born 4 June 1839
Fanny Jane born 20 March 1842
Eliza Acton born 30 January 1844
Caroline Acton born 13 February 1846
Thomas Henry Acton born 30 October 1848
George Acton born 13 November 1850
Edwin James Acton born 10 May 1852
David Acton born 3 September 1854
Francis Acton born 28 January 1857
Sarah Anne Acton born 15 August 1859

I visited Longhope Church last weekend to look for graves. I found one for Caroline who died 30 September 1867 aged 21 and another one with inscriptions for several Actons. Unfortunately the grave for James and Eliza seems to have disappeared! Did you visit the church recently? There was an entry in the Visitor's Book I thought might be you.

I expect you already know that Maria's first husband was Joseph Malsom who died in 1868 aged 37. They married in Longhope Church in 1858. I think they had two children. Her second husband, Benjamin Malsom was obviously some relation to her first husband?

Good luck with your searching.

Best wishes

Jan

Hi Jan

I do not have all the dates of birth of the Acton children, would be nice to have sometime. The Joseph Markey witness to Charles Acton and Ann Markey's wedding could be either her father or brother, I have not as yet come across an Emma Markey.

I live near Abertillery in Gwent.

Best wishes
Esther
