JELF / VAUGHAN Ruardean & Gloucestershire (reply)

Hello Slowhands

As you say interesting that the Vaughans are mentioned in this posting
I am hoping to get to Hereford soon I would love to see these documents.
Presumably the numbers you quote are the Record Office Index numbers and if I quote these I should be able to look at them?

I do realise that they are not anything to do with William Henry Vaughan and Julia Hewlett, but that name of Vaughan gets everywhere.

JELF / JELFE / GELF / GELFE Ruardean & Gloucestershire (reply)

Bigland transcription for Ruardean
CHANCEL
In Memory of RICHARD JELFE, of this Parish,Gent who departed this Life Dec 28, 1769, Aged 78 Years
Also in Memory of JOANE,the Wife of RICHARD JELFE,who departed this Life Aug 27, 1773, Aged 78 Years.
Also of ANN, Wife of J. BENNETT Daughter of RICHARD JELFE, who died 4 Nov 1806, Aged 77 Years

JELF seems to have been a wealthy Gloucestershire family, so having members in the Clery is not a surprise. Branches ( possibly linked) appear in Ruardean / Sandhurst/Maisemore and Bristol

An example of the wealth / investments slightly further a field :-

Dingestowe, Monmouth - 1720 - Copy of Assignment of Mortgage. Mortgage granted to Richard Jelfe (City of Gloucester), assigned by Charles Hopkins (Dingestowe) to Jeremiah Jenkins (Gloucester). Details of original mortgage granted to William Jelfe (Richard's father) in 1708 on security of lands in Ruardean, Glos. subsequent assignment of mortgage & transfer of property to Richard. As part of this agreement, some of the original mortgage was repaid.
Paper - written on 7 sides - some small holes in folds of final sheet - hardly affecting text

and a further example

Handwritten English vellum indenture dated 1708 during the reign of Queen Anne being the conveyance of property in Raurdeane in the County of Gloucester between William Jelfe, Yeoman, of the one part; and Richard Gwinnett of London, an Esquire, of the second part. Nicely penned in flourishing style with two blue revenues with insert, tax stamp on verso, and paper over wax seal.

John JELF - vicar of Blaisdon

Hello Forum
I wondered if anyone here can tell me anything about John JELF vicar of Blaisdon between 1728-78. I am looking to find his father and mother. I know there was a William JELFe who was vicar of Tirley from 1681 and I am wondering if there could be a connection. I also understand there was a family of JELFES in Ruardean. They seem to arrive in Ruardean about 1650 - has anyone a theory/knowledge on where they came from.
Many Thanks
