It’s good to know of the Gloucestershire BDM site. I will visit it again and I’m sure it will be useful.

Neither Ann Vick is relevant and it’s good to be able to exclude options.

The will is relevant so we’ll definitely be examining that.

Daniel and Sylvanus Vick (reply)

Thanks for all that information, so much to be digested and assessed for personal relevance.

You mentioned the marriage of Silvanus Vick and Ann Lancashire in 1830 (our ancestors) and also that an 1846 death of a 62 year old Silvanus Vick would not be the same person. An alternative death for "our" ancestor is 1861 which I do not feel suits the social history we know, ie they had left the farm in Colwall in 1844 and all children were living with relatives at the 1851 census. Is there any chance that the "62" for age on the CD could be a typo for 52?

I cannot find the wife Ann, born 1805 in Denby, in any 1841 census returns despite extensive searching and had thought she'd died following the birth of the daughter born earlier in 1841. However, she showed up a couple of years later in a newspaper article. Is there any chance that a definite sighting appears in any Gloucestershire death records you have access to? I found a digitised copy of a parish register for a death of Ann Vick, wife of Silvanus Vick in Brecon in 1850. Innkeeper was recorded. That is my current favourite as her death as it still fits in with kids being with relatives at the next census.

The 30 year old Hannah Vick in the family's 1841 census records remains a mystery. I guess she must be a cousin and I've tried to see if she fits in with other Vick families but have yet to find A Hannah Vick which seems correct. Do you have any ideas please?

Many thanks for your time and thought.

link to some info

http://www.selectsurnames3.com/vick.html

There were other Vicks in Gloucestershire by the 18th century. At Elmore church near Stroud there are family monuments to Silvanus Vick who died there in 1776 and his son Daniel who died in 1810.
On his death in 1754 William Vick, a Bristol wine merchant, left money to fund the construction of a bridge across the Avon Gorge. This eventually became the Clifton suspension bridge.

I guess this refers to the Elmore just across the Severn. The link below contains some monumental inscriptions – there are several VICKs mentioned but no Sylvanus. Perhaps this means his monument is no longer extant or cannot be read. There is a Daniel but he's much too late to be yours.

Daniel and Sylvanus Vick

Hello everyone :-)

I am in Australia and my sister and I are researching our family history on both sides.
This is a substantial job started late in life !!
The Vick family form part of our heritage and we are seeking more information please if anyone can help

We understand that both Daniel Vick (b. 1753) and his son Sylvanus (1792-1846) are buried in the churchyard of St. John the Baptist, Elmore
Sylvanus having a monument and Daniel a plain grave

Sylvanus's daughter, our Great grandmother Cate Lancshire Vick, came to Australia around 1849 and married our great grandfather who had also emigrated here around the same time. Our own fathers name included the name Vick as a second name.

What we are seeking to know is if anyone is aware of any photos of these graves or any inscriptions on them.
We have googled but cannot see the church yard as it is surrounded by trees .
I have searched for photos but nothing comes up for me

I would be most grateful if anyone knows or knows of such information

many thanks

Ieeee
