SAMUEL PARRY more Longhope area "strays". (reply)

This series of census entries suggests that the Samuel Parry who was the son of John and Caroline was alive on 2/4/1871. Perhaps the Durham Samuel Parry found by Jeff shouldn’t be discounted?

GR 1851 Census, Blaisdon, Nott Wood

John PARRY, Head, Mar, 38, Ag Lab, b. Glos. Longhope
Charles, Son, 4, Gloucestershire, Longhope

For ref, found by Jeff:-

GR 1881 Census, Elvet, Durham
William COLTMAN?, Head, Mar, 48, Coal Miner, b. Durham, Pensher?
Jane, Wife, Mar, 37, Durham, Gateshead
Samuel PARRY, Boarder, Un, 30, Coal Miner, Gloucester, Longhope

---------------------------

I've used Familysearch to search for all "Parry/Porry/Perry"s born Longhope, Blaisdon or Hartpury, trying to find anymore who moved far outside the County or neighbouring Herefordshire and South Wales (I see several in South Wales, but apparently not from "our" family as far as I can tell).

First hit is James Parry b1850, also a miner on the Durham coalfield, lives in Durham town.
Again not a rare name at all, not sure which family branch he fits into, but worth a mention;

1881 Census, Lovegreen St, Framwellgate, Durham
John Holliday Son M 2 M Durham, Durham, England
James Parry Lodger M 30 Coal Miner, Longhope, Gloucestershire, England

I cannot obviously see him in any other census, so unsure about his parents/family.

Edith A Parry Daughter F 11 England
Caroline G Parry Daughter F 5 England
Alice Kavanagh Visitor F 34 Suffolk, England

I cannot see anymore definite records for this William b1853, except for Samuel's brother William, as per Census top of this page.

------------

Hopefully these findings may help Eric or any other Parry researchers.

SAMUEL PARRY's sister Mary Ann in 1871, 1891, 1901. (reply)

Here's Samuel's sister Mary Ann again, before she went to Weymouth.
I recognise the names of the owners of this large household, think they were at Longhope Manor in later years, or was it Bradley Hall ?;

Mary Ann Emery Servant F 37 Nurse. Leigh, Essex

(This has given me a possible lead for one of my trees, to a younger Mary Smart "of Gloucester" who perhaps oddly married at Longhope in 1892, thanks !).

------------------------

And as with the aforementioned 1881 Census, she stays in Weymouth, and stays single.
Still no sign of Samuel, but looks like another sister Elizabeth is now there too, business is booming ?.

PS POLITE NOTE TO ADMIN - I see the site software still doesn't permit us to use the word "kit-chen" in full, seems rather daft to me. Or "Jer-sey" too, even dafter... !

Assuming this name should read Coleman, not a rare name no doubt in Durham, but a POSSIBLE link to their Hartpury home, perhaps ?
OR INDEED PROBABLY NOT, as there is indeed a surname COLTMAN in the Durham area, and plenty more Census entries fro William & Mary Coltman too. Ah well..

SAMUEL PARRY (reply)

Thanks a lot Mike. Maybe my Familysearch methods will respond better to "Porry", my lack of hits earlier seemed very odd, unless it was just guiding me towards Durham... ?!

Yep, I just input John & Caroline Poory, found the 1861 Census straightaway, and I used to think Familysearch/LDS was excellent at automatically offering name spelling variations... maybe they've been "improved" aka Ancestry ;-)

Re that 1881 Census, "Pensher" is the old name (local dialect!) for Penshaw or even once Painshaw, near Durham, itself a coal mining town (Herrington Colliery); see http://ukga.org/england/Durham/towns/PainshawPenshaworPensher.html

----

Continuing the Census series from Mike's post;

1881 Census, Taynton, Gloucestershire

Household Role Gender Age Birthplace
John Parry Head M 68 Widower, Farming 1 Acre Land, Longhope, Gloucestershire, England
Charles Parry Son M 14 Longhope, Gloucestershire, England
Ellen Dawe Housekeeper F 40 Cannon Frome, Herefordshire, England

Wife Caroline's dead, so searching other children to try to find Samuel, perhaps;

William born Blaisdon abt 1853 = ?? cannot find for sure, so many Williams..

James born Blaisdon abt 1855 = 1881 is a railway porter, lodging in large household of Robert Mawby, outfitter's assistant(gen dealer) at Cirencester.
Cannot find him in 1891.

Emily b1857 = 1871 is servant at large household of James Dicks, grocer, Huntley.
Then ?, married ?

Henry b1859, cannot find in any census, or a Burial Record ??

Cannot find Elizabeth b1861, married ?

Julia b1863, not sure but could this be her in 1881 ?.
WHY GO ALL THIS WAY APPARENTLY ALONE, ESPECIALLY AGED JUST 19, UNLESS SHE TRAVELLED WITH BIG BROTHER SAMUEL (30) ON HIS ROUTE TO DURHAM ??.

SAMUEL PARRY, Blaisdon area, 1850-1870. (reply)

Hi Eric,
do you know just how many Samuel Parrys were born in total who we may be getting confused with ?. I ask as my first look via Family Search suggests rather too many for comfort, yet I'm surprisingly struggling to find yours on the earlier Census' with his parents. There is also the possibility of Parry being transcribed as Perry, and vice versa. I thought my researches for the Jones of Lydbrook were difficult, but it seems your problems are worse !

For starters, and to help my thinking, from FoD Prs we have these Baptisms;

Record_ID:128264
Entry_Number: 619
Year: 1847
Month: Sep
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: AR90/3
Page_Number: 78
Parish_Chapel: Aston Ingham
Soundex: P600

PRs show this Samuel b1847 marries Mary Yemm at Weston under Penyard in 1873, so can be discounted.

Record_ID: 271877
Entry_Number: 182
Year: 1850
Month: Sep

So very similar to your Samuel, except the Parents of course !

And GlosBMD gives these Birth Records;

Record_ID: 249540

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry

??????

I suspect it may help for all these Births to be researched thro the Census' etc, so as to narrow down who was who and where. However, as hard as I try, my only reference site LDS is proving very unhelpful when trying to search the above people on the Census', odd ! But even then that won't solve your query as to why your Samuel died. I've revisited the old local newspapers again c1870 but no trace of any Samuel Parrys ?, widening the timescale confirms, as you know, an awful lot of Samuel Parrys in the news over many generations, especially a Samuel M (Morton?) Parry who I think was an RSPCA Inspector in the 1920s etc.

I've also searched the Glos Archives Nonconformists site, but to my surprise just one Samuel Parry on their database, a Will from 1837 for a "gentleman of Longhope".
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Results.aspx

==================

Anyway, you've probably seen this record but if not here's one Samuel born "Longhope c1851" you can put into the discounted pile.

1881 Census, Dodd St, Elvet, Durham, England

More to come, hopefully soon, J

Hi again Goldenfox.
As you say, he's not in the Inquests section of this site, and a very quick search suggests his death isn't mentioned in the local papers as might be expected from an accident, altho I included his full name in the search will may well be a mistake, I suggest you may want to try again just using "Parry" etc.

SAMUEL PARRY

Hi, Samuel was born in abt. 1850 at Blaisdon, and later was in residence at Longhope.
He was a coal miner and records show he died in 1870 age 19. I am wondering if he was involved in a pit accident. I have searched on this excellent site without success, and would appreciate if someone can help me on this, many thanks in advance.

Samuel's parents were John Parry 1813-1894 and Caroline Glover 1824-1874. I said above that Samuel was a coalminer, and that is probably correct, however it is possible that there was a different Samuel Parry that was the coalminer, both being born and died about the same time.
I may be totally wrong on this , but would like to get to the bottom of it.
