Morgan family East Dean (reply)

Hello Mark,

As my paternal family was rather large in the 19th Century, I tend to end for example with Henry Griffiths married Rosabella Sarah Morgan with dates. I don't usually follow female lines.

In this case I know some more because I am in contact with my cousin, Rose's grandson through marriage, and seen his collection of photographs which I think includes the one of Selina Morgan. He currently has another large collection from another cousin and intends to put some in the Soudley gallery here. I will ask my cousin.

I can't really help with parishes frequented. My family used Newland (including Coleford and Clearwell Chapels which were out stations of Newland) when in West Dean, and then Newnham after moving to East Dean, then Cinderford after 1845. I think a visit or two to Gloucester County Records could yield what you are looking for, if armed with a map of Gloucestershire Parishes. They only charge a couple of quid for entry.

From my previous Post, please ignore the comment about 1910 Tax Map. Selina had probably moved out since her husband had died in 1907.I may well have already looked, but that was 10 years ago or more.

Regards,

Roger

Morgan family East Dean (reply)

Hi Roger,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my request for information.

I am doing the research for my partner who is the grand daughter of Samuel Morgan, "your" Rosabella's brother.

One of your members suggested I check the Newnham registers for Joseph's baptism as his brother Thomas was baptised there. As far as I can trace, the LDS have not filmed these registers. Do you have any suggestions?

I note that you have seen a photo of Selina in old age - do you have it, or know who does?

It might be of interest to you to know that Samuel Morgan married Beatrice Mary Lucas in St Johns East Dean on 25 December 1895. Beatrice's mother, Eliza Lucas a widow, married Samuel's older brother Thomas. Both families moved to the Rhondda in the 1890s.

Thanks again,

Mark Tucker

Rosabella 1877 - 1966 (She's buried in Swindon Cemetry)married my grandfathers brother Henry Griffiths 1873 - 1950. There are plenty of descendants now living. She was a striking and very attractive looking woman, also a formidable character. My cousin still shakes at the thought of her, his grandmother. I have seen many photographs of her but do not own any. Henry and Rose were last owners of our family house 'Rock House' on Bradley Hill up until c1925. The Morgan's lived close by on Bradley Hill. I have seen pics. from 1920's but not such that I could identify the house. The 1910 Tax Map and Owners/Occupiers list would identify.

Joseph was born 1839 and died in 1907. He's buried in St Johns, Cinderford Entry No 1112. 26 Jan 1907. Selina 1848 - 1913 , also St Johns Entry 1535, died Abertillery, buried 3 March 1913 65 Years.

Cinderford - St Johns, Newnham, Parkend and Blakeney are possible registers to look in, and then the non-conformist dimension to consider :-)

for the marriage

Mary is listed as born East Dean on later census data, so "any" East Dean Parish for her parents and wedding...

Morgan family East Dean

I have traced Thomas and Mary Morgan and their son, Joseph, in the 1841 census. They are shown as living in the Forest of Dean, Bradley Hill, "Extra Parochial".

Can you suggest the most likely parish they may used for their marriage and baptism of Joseph?
I have checked the Westbury film, where Joseph was married, but no other references.

Thanks,

Mark Tucker
