Jane MORTIMORE 1838 FoD (reply)

Hi Slowhands,
It's possible, I suppose - although I know from Elizabeth's birth certificate in 1844 that her parents were William and Ann (TIPPINS) MORTIMER.

The really thorny thing is that there appear to be two James MORTIMER/MORTIMOREs on the 1851 census, both connected with the MORTIMER/TIPPINS family.

A thought I had is that perhaps William was married before (he is much older than Ann) and that James (1, b.1833) was his son by his first marriage, while James (2, bc1838) was his son by his second marriage. I haven't been able to find a GRO birth registration for James (2), but did find one for Mary Jane MORTIMORE in Bristol in 1838. I think she is our Jane MORTIMORE/MORTIMER - will have to acquire the birth certificate and see if it sheds any light!

Thanks again for all your help!
Kirsty

James MORTIMORE - Parkend- West Dean, C19 (reply)

There is a spanner in the works! In 1851, James MORTIMER appears with parents William and Ann in Bristol, age 13 - so he can't be the same James MORTIMORE lodging with the TIPPINS family in 1851, age 19. But... in 1871, the FoD James MORTIMORE gives his place of birth as "Upper Knole [sic] Bristol" - which is where my Elizabeth was born as well. It can't be a coincidence, can it? I've checked both originals, and both read clearly as James. Help! Any suggestions?

Jane MORTIMORE 1838 FoD (reply)

Hi Slowhands, yes, it looks like it could be her, doesn't it? I think she must be the same as the Mary Jane MORTIMORE whose marriage Alfred and Elizabeth (MORTIMORE) HARRIS witnessed in 1866. I found her again on the 1861 census, lodging with a family by the name of NEAT at Parkend:

Thomas NEAT. h. 40. Forge man. Buckholt [???] Monmouthshire
Caroline NEAT. w. 40. " " . Blind
[and 5 children]
Jane MORTIMORE. lodger. 22. Whitecroft

If this is indeed her, then by 1861, when father William was living alone in Bristol, both James and {Mary) Jane were living at Parkend. No sign of Ann in 1861, although William still claims to be "married". No sign either of daughters Elizabeth (b. 1844) or Sarah (b. 1842). I've tried as many variants of MORTIMORE/MORTIMER as I can think of, but I'm sure I'm missing some!

Thanks again for the help!

TIPPINS Parkend- West Dean, C19 (reply)

Wow, Slowhands, Michael, thank you for such speedy replies! That's a lot of TIPPINS all together - and I see that most of the men were Engine Drivers, at a colliery I suppose rather than on the railways. Now if only I could link 'my' Ann in with them, that would be perfect!

I've looked again at the 1851 census entry that Slowhands quoted - I had read Ann's age as 34, putting her birth around 1817, but I can see how it could also be read as 54, putting it around 1797. Hmm... another possibility! If only I could find her on another census, it might give another clue. The only possibility I found on the 1841 census, though, was the following, which gives a birth year of 1809:

1841 Wales. Maesteg [?] GLA HO107/1422/15/14 p20
Ann MORTIMORE. 32. N
Jno. MORTIMORE. 5. N
James MORTIMORE. 2. N
.
No sign of William, though...

When I looked at the IGI, I found the following possibilities:

Ann TIPPINS d. William/Sarah. Ruardean, 20 July 1800
Hanah [sic] TIPPINS d. William/Sarah. Ruardean, 8 Dec 1805

Lots to think about, so thank you again!
Kirsty

TIPPINS/MORTIMORE - West Dean, C19

Hi everyone - I've just come back to the site (and genealogy) after a bit of a break and what a wonderful resource. Thank you, David!

I've been working on my Forest ancestry for several years now and have several well established lines - WORGAN, PREEST, BAGLIN, HARRIS, HEATH, HILL, THOMAS - all in West Dean. Just last week, looking at another line, I found what I think is a Forest connection - and I would love to hear from anybody who can help me prove whether it is or not.

My g-g-g-grandmother Elizabeth MORTIMER/MORTIMORE was born in Upper Knowle, Bristol in 1844 and came to the Forest (so I thought) after marrying Alfred HARRIS in Stratford upon Avon in 1865 (Alfred was the author of the diary that's been discussed here before). I've found her family in Bristol in 1851, but only her father was still there in 1861 - no sign of the rest. Elizabeth's mother was born Ann TIPPINS, in about 1817 in Gloucestershire, and I know TIPPINS is a Forest name, so in some desperation I checked the West Dean 1861 census - and found a James MORTIMORE, right name and age for Elizabeth's brother, lodging with George and Ann TIPPINS in Parkend (next door to William and Ann TIPPINS). This James seems to have stayed in the village and married - I found him again in 1871 and 1881, with a family. I also discovered (thanks to this site!) that Alfred and Elizabeth HARRIS witnessed a marriage between Mary Jane MORTIMORE and James BAND at Bream in 1866.

My question, then, is whether anybody can help me make a link between my Ann TIPPINS, born about 1817 (according to the 1851 census), and the TIPPINS family with whom this James MORTIMORE is lodging. Could Ann (bc 1817) have been a younger sister of William and George, or even William's daughter? (I notice from later censuses that they were originally from Monmouthshire)

I'd also love to hear from anyone with related interests!
Kirsty
