William WICKENDEN 1796 Awre/Blakeney (reply)

The Rev W S Wickenden in Middx 1851 born Etloe, was sponsored by Dr Jenner to go to Cambridge, where he obtained an degree. Dr Jenner named him Bard of the Forest, and The Rev's books are in the British Library and Gloucestershire Reference Library - some autobiographical which make interesting reading.

His great nephew, (my great grandfather) William Wickenden is living at Nibley Mill 1901 - and I've just sent a copy of Sales Particulars of Nibley Mill c1912 to this site - The Cottage next door where his Son-in-law is called Pound Cottage on this Poster.

Hope this helps.

Sharon,

Sorry for the delay in answering but I missed your post.

I would be happy to exchange information on the Turley family if you contact me directly.

I would also be interested to know about your Phillips family and if there is any connection to mine. My Phillips family are in the Bream area now but originally from Hilliersfield.

Blakeney Hill (reply)

..Its an interesting debate if the 1841 enumerator has recorded living "on Blakeney Hill" or living "in the Blakeney Hill [Inclosure]" ? My interpretation is "in" rather than "on".

The Denby Walk is a an exparochial area ( as most of the Forest was, i.e. East Dean and West Dean )

WICKENDEN Family Blakeney Hill (reply)

Hello Roger,

I do recognise your name - you helped me with my husband's GRIFFITHS line in Cirencester..

Thanks for finding John for me. We went to Newham and saw the Severn Bore while we were there on a very cold and wet Sunday in August.

The WICKENDEN family is my mother's maiden name - I am getting some super old pictures of my family from a second cousin from Blakeney, whom I've just met.

The local people in Blakeney were so kind to Dave and myself - and took us all around the area telling us the history and finding long lost relatives for us.

Still having great fun with my Family Tree (and helping local friends who are always here on my computer looking for their roots).

All the best

WICKENDEN Family Blakeney Hill (reply)

My family WICKENDEN are on the 1901 Census Page 11 of 29 at Nibley Mill, Blakeney

William WICKENDEN aged 57 my great grandfather - a Farmer born Rendcombe with his Wife Elizabeth, daughter Daisy, Son Harry and Grandson Reginald.

Next Door at Nibley is Evan DAVIES and he is married to William's daughter Martha.

Next door to that is Rose Cottage......

I have just visited Nibley, and Nibley Mill still exists and I do have some old photographs.

The WICKENDEN family were in the Blakeney/Awre/Etloe area from around 1775 -

In 1891 William WICKENDEN was running the Temperance Hotel at the top of the Hill in Blakeney - which is at present up for sale.

In 1881, William and his family were at Mill End, Blakeney where he was a Butcher and Dealer.

In 1871 he was in Blakeney Road, and a Butcher.

My other WICKENDEN relatives were in Etloe 1841/1851/1861

The Rev W S WICKENDEN on the 1861 census for Etloe (occupation, Clergyman of the Church of England and without care of souls) - was sponsored in his youth by Dr Jenner and went to Cambridge where he got a BA - and wrote many books, and was nicknamed 'Bard of the Forest'

Most of them are buried in the Blakeney Churchyard, where I saw the name Virgo quite a lot...

Blakeney Hill (reply)

Bertha,

I am interested in the Turley family on Blakeney Hill. My connection is Edward Turley b1819 who married Mary Ann Sterry in 1844.

I also have connections to the following Blakeney Hill families:
Lydiard,Everetts and Davis family of Cherry Tree Cottage.

Helen

Blakeney Hill

I would like to connect up with others researching the blakeney hill area to establish family connections and identify houses etc.

My family is 1851 John Turley and Ann Phillips, his brothers also married Sterry and other connects include Vergo.

There were a number of Turley familys, I think there connection goes back to 1700 as with large families and similar naming I hope to find the connection.

The only family left in the area was Louisa Turley who married after 1901.

The houses do not have numbers but names Rose tree etc. If we can unite and document the area it would be useful to us all.
