HENRY Howard JENKINS b1897 Great War veteran??? (reply)

Thanks a lot for that Mike.
So, on the premise the above research suggests "our" Henry survived the War to marry afterwards, it seems that one (or less likely both) these cards could indeed relate to him. Both appeared to have survived the War, otherwise I think the card would have been annotated to show if they had been killed (eg "K.I.A" = killed in action) or seriously wounded.

HENRY Howard JENKINS b1897 Great War veteran??? (reply)

For the sake of completion, there is no further information on the medal cards of either Henry H Jenkins other than that both qualify for the Victory and British War medals. No mention of the 1914 or 1914/15 stars though - from this I guess they were conscripts or later volunteers.

HENRY Howard JENKINS b1897 Great War veteran??? (reply)

Using Ancestry's free search pages for the Army Medal Cards (the first port of call for searching WW1 soldiers) shows no obvious Henry Howard Jenkins, which was unlikely anyhow, but they do have cards for two Henry H. Jenkins.
Without subscribing I cannot read the cards or see more details.

However the National Archives site yields more info, namely:

Reference:WO 372/10/218412
Description:
Medal card of Jenkins, Henry H
Corps Regiment No Rank
South Wales Borderers 25315 Private

Reference:WO 372/10/218413
Description:
Medal card of Jenkins, Henry H
Corps Regiment No Rank
Machine Gun Corps 170879 Private
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_col=2&_q=henry+h+jenkins

The South Wales Borderers is a Regiment often associated with men from the Forest or just across into Wales such as Abergavenny or the Regiment's home town of Brecon.

These two could be the same man, as the MGC were only formed later in the War and you could volunteer, or be volunteered, into this new unit, particularly if you had mechanical/technical experience. Viewing the actual Medal Cards may even show both Army numbers on the same card, meaning it is the same man, soldiers changed numbers if they changed units. See this prior thread for more suggestions
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=33276

-----------

Of course if Henry Howard Jenkins did serve, it's quite possible his records were filed under just "Henry Jenkins", this search yields many more possibles with some in our local Regiments(see link below). The only records that can definitely link a soldier to this search are the Service or Pension Records,as they include details of next of kin etc, but as you may know the majority of the Records were destroyed during WW2.
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/s/res?_col=2&_q=henry+jenkins

HENRY Howard JENKINS b1897 Great War veteran??? (reply)

Hi again Bill,
I presume this is your man, from this site's PRs ?

Record_ID: 1053394
Entry_Number: 36
Year: 1898
Month: Jan

If so then, altho he may well have been known as Howard at home or in the Census's, I think you need to search for Henry H. or Henry Howard Jenkins in the Army Records, and all other BMD etc records come to think of it. Sorry for being slow to spot this, it was only after my trying to check his Birth on FreeBMD and GlosBMD (with a view to trying to find a subsequent marriage etc) that I realised there were no Howard Jenkins b1898ish.

HTH J

(UPDATE, OOPS !! just too late, well done Dink !)

As Dinks says, from GlosBMD site;

Searching for possible offspring within FoD PRs or GlosBMD yields no results, but there are the following Jenkins/Teague births in our District in FreeBMD, altho of course these are not rare surnames so no definite proof yet.

Howard JENKINS Great War veteran??? (reply)

For this sites parish records he was christened Henry Howard Jenkins, so if he did enlisted it would probably be under that name.

He is not on my Soldiers from the Forest List that I am compiling (though he might yet be)

It looks like he married Edith Teague in 1919 and possibly died in Gloucester in 1961

Howard JENKINS Great War veteran??? (reply)

Hi Bill,
first, have you searched for Howard's Medal Card and hopefully Service/Pension Records, both for "your" Howard and separately for the Howard Army Number 57034 (VERY helpful info) that you found on CWGC ?. I don't currently have access to such Records so sadly cannot help your search.
(Out of curiosity, were there other Howard Jenkins listed on the CWGC site ?. If there were please look at all the entries, not just those that seem to fit wrt the Regiment, very often our ancestors joined, or were transferred into, "non Forest / Wales" regiments. (eg I spent a long time searching the Army Records for an ancestor with a fairly common name who we knew died in the trenches, looked at all the "local" Regiments, to eventually find he was a SAILOR in the Royal Naval Division... ).

Secondly, have you tried to search your Howard's life after 1911, altho I guess the name isn't the rarest so may well be difficult. Of particular help may be a marriage record, many young men married during the War, these Records sometimes include Army references.

Hope this helps, Jeff

UPDATE: I've just looked at CWGC and see no other Howards, but there are a few H.Jenkins listed which could be your Howard(similarly in the Medal Cards etc), please check them all as occasionally there will be extra notes added naming next of kin. Sadly I must away to the chores now, good luck.

Howard JENKINS Great War veteran???

I am trying to figure out if Howard JENKINS (born in Plumphill in 1898)the son of Isaiah JENKINS and Fanny BUFFIN was a WWI veteran.

According to the CWGC there is a Howard JENKINS #57034 who was killed July 31, 1917 while serving with the 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment

In the 1911 census the family was living in Glamorganshire, Wales

I checked to see if there was any Honour Rolls but couldn't find any.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Bill
