Aaron HALE/ Jordan / Smart / More / Evans/ Hawkins / Nelmes (reply)

Hi Caroline,

I've been plotting, aggregating records and scratching my head all evening.

According to what's been transcribed and posted here I see Aaron (1703) son of Aaron and Eliz Jordan, marrying Ann Evans, one child, Winifret. I can't find a death record for Ann Evans, is that the same Aaron who married Mary Smart and begat Aaron (1730)? (I should have put your message on another screen, I can't remember the details now that I have started to reply.) I don't know what I know any more, Dee just threw me a curve by telling me that the baptism of Ann Hale was actually a mistake and the name was Aaron. That is borne out by the IGI.

Show me how we get from Jordan to Smart please.

Aaron Hale (reply)

These are my conclusions about Aaron HALE and Elizabeth EVANS and their children:

Aaron HALE was christened on 22 Dec 1765 in Little Dean, the son of Aron and Ann HALE.
[Sources] i. IGI and FOD transcript entry 166091 although the transcription records the child's name as ANN but a transcriber's note states that the name was unclear and that ANN is a best guess -the date recorded is 22 Dec 1766. I submitted a transcription check/correction and it is definitely AARON, 22 Dec 1765.
ii. Correspondence with another researcher Reginald DAY said that his birth date is given on his death certificate and is the same date as his baptism.

Aaron appeared in the census in 1841 in Lane End, Extra Parochial parish of Worcester Walk Dean, Registration District of Coleford. Aaron was living next door to his son Thomas and his wife Ann. His wife Elizabeth was not in the house - having died earlier. He died, according to the burial register, age 86 in Feb 1850 in Littledean Lane End. He was buried on 5 Feb 1850 in Newland Parish.

Aaron HALE and Elizabeth EVANS were married on 25 May 1786 in Newland Parish, Gloucestershire by Banns. The marriage was witnessed by in Thomas BOND and Hester STEPHENS. [Parish Register]

Elizabeth EVANS was born c1768 in Gloucestershire [burial]. She died at the age of 50 in Forest of Dean, and was buried on 17 Jul 1818 in Newland Parish.

Aaron HALE and Elizabeth EVANS had the following children:

Susan HALE, born c1786 in Coleford, bapt 3 Dec 1786 in Newland [FOD transcript]

Henry HALE, born c1789, Coleford, bapt 31 May 1789; married Ann HAWKINS, 4 Feb 1815, Newland Parish.

Jane HALE, born c1792 in Berry Hill, West Dean, bapt 4 Nov 1792 in Newland Parish. [FOD transcript]

Thomas HALE, born c1794 in Berry Hill, West Dean, bapt 29 Jun 1794 Newland Parish [Bapt Register/FOD transcript]; married Ann BROWN, 5 Jun 1824, Newland Parish [FOD] he was a widower of St Briavels; died 10 Jan 1863, Lane End, Coleford; bur 13 Jan, Coleford Baptist. [FOD] This is my line.

Molly HALE born c1796 in Berry Hill, West Dean, bapt 14 Aug 1796 in Newland Parish [FOD].

William HALE, bapt 19 May 1799 Coleford [IGI]; married ?Hanna NEWLAND, 1829.

Hannah HALE, born c1801 in Coleford, bapt 7 Dec 1801 in Newland Parish.[FOD]

Nancy HALE, born c1803 in Coleford, bapt 26 Jun 1803 in Newland Parish.[FOD]

Aaron HALE, born c1805, Lane End, bapt 20 Oct 1805, Coleford Chapel[Bapt. Register/FOD]; married Elizabeth MORGAN, 24 Dec 1825, St. Briavels [FOD]; married Rachel VANT, abt 1854; died 13 Jun 1884, Palantine, Cook Co., IL at home[Reg DAY].

I believe that Aron HALE father to Aaron c1765 possibly married Ann TRIGGE, 14 May 1762 in Littledean. This seems to be the only likely possibility, at present, from the transcripts. The transcripts also identify the following possible issue of Aron and Ann HALE:
Edward, bapt 26 June 1763, Littledean
Sarah & Noah both bapt 12 Feb 1769, Littledean
and possibly Ann 2 Aug 1778, Littledean.

There are definitely 2 Aaron HALEs born c1765 - the other bapt 10 Feb 1765 is the son of Aaron and Susan/Susannah HALE who appear to be from Welsh Bicknor/Ruardean area. Whereas, Aaron son of Aron and Ann and all their children are from the Littledean area.

It is then possible that Aron was the son of Edward and Hannah HALE born c1741, bapt 13 Oct 1741, Littledean [FOD] and I know that this thread has been mentioned on the forum before.

Aaron HALE/ Jordan / Smart / More / Evans/ Hawkins / Nelmes (reply)

Hi Jerry,

I am a descendant also from this line of Hales and would like to share my research with you to see if it fits at all:

The Hale at the top of my tree is:

Aaron c. 1670 Ruardean who married Elizabeth Jordan begat
Aaron c. 1703 Ruardean who married Mary Smart (The Smart Line I have going back to 1520) begat
Aaron c. 1730 Ruarden who married Susanna More begat
Aaron c, 1765 Welsh Bicknor who married Elizabeth Evans begat
Henry c. 1789 Coleford who married Ann Hawkins begat
John 1819 East Dean/Cinderford who married Harriet Nelmes begat
John 1852 Cinderford who married Catherine Williams (Kate) begat
William John 1885 Merthyr Tydfil/ Cinderford who married Sarah Ellen Evans begat
William John 1910 Cinderford who married Ida Spicer - these were my grandparents.

Kind Regards,

Aaron Hale (reply)

Dee,

You are right, there is no evidence for the Ann Baldwin marriage. I think I took that from Edwin before I started being more careful. With the ADVANCED SEARCH it is easy to find Ann Baldwin Manning marrying Christopher Matthews 8 Aug 1803 and then Ann Baldwin marrying John Manning in 1771. I haven't looked for a burial for John Manning.

You are also correct in stating that what I have listed as birth dates are actually baptism dates, I'm trying to correct those now.

I agree that Aaron (1765) shown in the 1841 Census age 75 was the son of Aaron and Susan, bapt 10 Feb 1765 (ID 316549 Ref: AW 19/2 Welsh Bicknor). Looking at the 6 Aaron Hales returned in a search of burials I believe Aaron (1765) is the only one that fits. The burial, Newland, on 5 Feb 1850 of Aaron age 86, residence Little Dean, Lane End is our Aaron (1765).

I then assume that Thomas age 47 (b. ~ 1794,)same household in 1841, is the son of Aaron (1765). Looking for marriages of Aaron Hale before 1794 I find two Aaron Hales marrying then. (1) 1786 to Eliz Evans and (2) 1787 to Ann Balding.

Checking for births of a Thomas only one of these fits, Eliz Evans. So I conclud that Aaron Hale married Elizabeth Evans 25 May 1786 Newland.

Then, following Thomas, bapt. 29 Jun 1794 to Aaron & Eliz of Berryhill at Newland confirms this Aaron (1765) and Thomas (1794) relationship.

Looking for a marriage of Thomas to an Ann (per 1841 census) I find Thomas Hale WIDOWER m. Anne Brown 4 Jun 1824. Children followed, Caroline Bapt Christchurch 10 Apr 1825, then Thomas b. ~ 1829, Elizabeth b. ~ 1830, Henry b. ~ 1836, George b. ~ 1837 and Marry b. ~ 1840. All five Bapt. at Christchurch on 21 May 1840 (ages of the children match the calculated birth year from the 1841 census.)

Looking for an earlier marriage for Thomas I find a Thomas Hale m. Jane Williams 6 May 1815. One child, Ann Hale to Thomas and Jane Hale, bapt 24 Sep 1815. Then Jane Hale, listed as "wife of Thomas" buried 4 Apr 1819 at Ruardean.

Baptisms confirm Thomas, bapt 1794 among the 11 children of Aaron (1765) and Eliz (Evans) Hale. Thomas' brother Aaron (1805) m. Eliz Morgan and he and Eliz came to America and that's my line.

Now I can go look for the Aaron who married Susan and was the father of our Aaron (1765), assuming Aaron (1765) was the first child, look for a marriage around 1764, could be earlier. An Aaron Hale married Susanah More in 1760, probably our couple.

Aaron and Susan/Susanna had three children, Henry (1761) Moses (1763) and Aaron (1765). So estimate that Aaron was born 1760 - 23 or 1737.

Another Aaron Hale m. 24 Dec 1787, Ann/Anne Balding (this is what Edwin probably confused with Baldwin). This Aaron was probably b. ~ 1764. Hard to sort him out from our Aaron (1765).

If correct that sorts out the Aarons in my line,

Aaron (1737)
Aaron (1765)
Aaron (1805)
The continuous line is broken but Aaron (1805) had a son James (1828)
who continued the line:
Aaron (1854)
Aaron (1913)
Aaron (1950)

Do you find any mis-assumptions or errors in any of this?

   Jerry Hale

Aaron Hale (reply)

James, Dee and all who have contributed to the conversation. And a special thanks to the guys from FOD who explained the relationships between the places. I made a map but had forgotten how close everything was.

I was off on another pursuit but am back again, the line is so very confusing. I am trying to build it based only on hard information. There are so many obvious mistakes in the family lines posted on Ancestry that I have to ignore them to keep from getting more confused. Most offer no documentation or even reasoned speculation. I believe that Edwin Hale in NZ has passed away. Annette Wilkinson of N.S.W. Australia has some interesting information concerning one of the Henrys. Some of her relatives visited FOD and looked at the parish registers and figured out some relationships that were confused because the name Ann and Nancy were used interchangeably.

My main concern right now is determining whether that long list of children from Susan (1786) through Aaron (1805) all belong to Aaron Hale and Elizabeth Evans or whether there were two Aaron and Elizabeths. That is only a span of 19 years, entirely possible for them all to be from the same mother, Eliz Evans. I descend from Aaron (1805)who was Bap. 20 Oct at Coleford. I am going to assume it is all one family and see what happens.

Aaron Hale (reply)

Hi Jerry

It is some time since we communicated our interests in Aaron HALE on this forum. I am beginning to doubt Aaron's parentage as being the soon of Aaron and Ann HALE, bpt 22 Dec 1765 at Littledean. I am now considering the possibility that he was the son of Aaron and Susan HALE bpt 10 Feb 1765 at Welsh Bicknor. They also had Moses HALE bpt 23 Jan 1763 also at Welsh Bicknor.

Both Moses and Aaron are lving in Lane End in the 1841 Census. Aaron jr married Elizabeth EVANS 25 May 1786 at Newland and their first child was called Susan bpt 3 Dec 1786, Newland.

I found a marriage at Ruardean, in the transcripts, for an Aaron HALE and Susanna MORE of Ruardean on 12 Jul 1760.

Have you thought about this as a possibility?

Aaron Hale (reply)

Hi

I have Hales in my family tree and was wondering if it was the same family as
all of you?
My grt grt grandmother was Elizabeth 'Harriet' Hale born abt1859 in the Ellwood
area. She married a Richard Edwards on 8th may 1880 in Parkend. They had 7
children that i know of.
Her father was Moses Hale and she had 2 other silblings that i know of. Edward
or Ernest Hale born abt1872 in the Coleford area, and a sister, Ali? Hale, but i have no details for her.
I was wondering if any of this rings any bells with any one?

Aaron Hale (reply)

Hi Jerry

I don't have Aaron HALE marrying Ann BALDWIN but this tree has been submitted on Ancestry.com/Rootsweb by Edwin HALE. He has the following:

ID: I111391730
Name: Aaron HALE
Given Name: Aaron
Surname: Hale
Sex: M
Birth: ? 1765 in Blakeney. or Littledean.Gls.
Death: Jan 1850 in Little Dean,Forest O' dean. Gloucestershire.
Christening: 22 Dec 1765 Little Dean
Burial: 5 Feb 1850 LittleDean, F.O'.D. Glos.(86yrs.old).
Change Date: 1 Mar 2002

Father: Aaron HALE b: 1741 in LittleDean.
Mother: Ann TRIGGE.1.WIFE.2.ANNLEACH: b: ? 1734 in 2nd wife.AnnLeach,M.15Jul.1770,byBanns

Marriage 1 Ann BALDWIN ? b: ?
Married: 1791 in Little Dean
Children
James HALE. b: 1791 in Littledean.Gls.
Thomas HALE b: 1794 in Litle Dean. Forest of Dean. Glos.
Aaron HALE b: 21 May 1795 in Little Dean. Forest of Dean.Glos.
Moses HALE
William HALE
Samuel HALE b: 23 Sep 1809 in LittleDean.Gls.
Edward HALE
John HALE

I have the same children as you do for Aaron and Elizabeth. However, I do have some slight differences. Where you have their dates of birth, I have the same dates as their baptism dates - the sources for these are the baptismal registers and IGI.

I have noticed that Edwin HALE also has a Thomas HALE born 1794 and I guess it is possible that this is 'my' Thomas. Although on checking the IGI, all the above children of Aaron & Ann HALE are listed, but not a Thomas. I did try to email Edwin but it bounced back.

Going back to Aaron & Elizabeth's children, I have Henry HALE b1789 marrying Ann HAWKINS on 4th Feb 1815 at Newland. For William b1799 I have his wife as Hanna NEWLAND c1829 but haven't corroborated this. I see that you have William dying age 2 in 1801 but marrying a Barbara! You also seems to have him baptised twice - 19 May 1799 and 12 Jan 1800. On checking the dates against the IGI, the 1799 date is for William s/o Aaron & Elizabeth and the 1800 date is William s/o Aaron & Ann (one of Edwin's). Perhaps the burial date is for him too?

I have Aaron snr's birth as being abt 1765, calculated from the 1841 Census where I found him living next door to son Thomas in Lane End, West Dean. Also from another source (Reginald Day's GEDCOM) he has his birthdate being 22 Dec 1765 which was date given on his death certificate. The IGI gives this date as his baptism and s/o Aaron and Ann HALE.

Well that is all I have for Aaron, but I have many HALEs in my tree..

Dee

Aaron Hale (reply)

Hi Dee,

It took a while to reply, my new computer crashed and, although I had a backup, it took a while to rebuild it.
I'm working on the line back beyond Aaron and Eliz Evans. Do I have their children correctly? I have 9. Here's what I have:

Descendants of Aaron Hale

Generation No. 1

1. AARON5 HALE (AARON4, AARON3, AARON2, ISAAC HALE1 (?))1,2,3 was born Abt. 1765 in Blakeney or Little Dean, Gloucestershire, England3, and died Jan 1850 in Little Dean, Gloucestershire, England; Age 86. He married (1) ELIZABETH EVANS4 25 May 1786 in Newland, Coleford, Glou., England. She was born Abt. 1764 , and died Jul 1818 in Age 54. He married (2) ANN BALDWIN 24 Dec 1787 in Little Dean, Gloucestershire, England9.

Notes for AARON HALE:
Note: There is an obvious conflict here between the two wives listed for Aaron Hale (1765). The NZ document has him married to Elizabeth Evans on May 25, 1786 and the AU document has him married to Ann Baldwin on 24 Dec 1787 but with a ? after the name and no source listed. We have found his marriage to Elizabeth Evans in the Newland records and so that seems the more reliable record. The ambiguity in all of this information comes from the several Aaron Hales (as well as several Edwards, Williams, Thomases etc) without sufficient information to always tell them apart. In their times it might have been clear who was who but looking back from 2002 one must be very careful to note the life span of each individual. A time line chart helps figure it all out. All of this Hale family information, prior to Aaron (1805) should be used as a guide to further research and not taken for fact at all. /H/

Aaron Hale (reply)

Hi, there are loads of Aaron Hale's in the family. From Aaron (b.1670) and Elizabeth, they have a son Aaron (b.1703) who married an Ann Evans and had a daughter winifred. He (aaron b.1703) also married (don't know if before or after) Mary Smart they had eight children one of whom was called Aaron. Aaron (b.1670) also had a son called issac and a son called john who both had sons they named aaron.

This may be a little confusing - hope it helps

Aaron HALE

I read with great interest the family history of the Hales of Ruardean and Nailbridge. I have traced my Hales back to Aaron and Elizabeth (Morgan) Hale and I believe Aaron's parents were Aaron and Elizabeth (Evans) Hale. That leaves just a couple of steps to merge with the Aaron and Elizabeth line in that published history. If anyone of that line is reading this perhaps you have the key bits we need to connect the lines?

I have an Aaron Hale who signed the Miner's Court order in 1707 but don't know how or if he is your line.
