CADOGAN & PHELPS, Awre salmon fisheries drowning, 1885 (reply)

I believe William Phelps' second wife was Harriet (Brown) Marsh, widow of my 4x great grandfather Joseph Marsh.

William Phelps, aged 60, widower of Awre (son of John Phelps, Captain) married Harriet Marsh, aged 54, widow of Awre (dau of Thomas Brown, Farmer) at Westbury on Severn Register Office in Jun 1874.

Harriet Brown was the daughter of Thomas Brown & Elizabeth Hooper, Elizabeth was the daughter of Stephen Hooper & Elizabeth Presbury of Field House (Fieldhouse).

Elizabeth Presbury was the younger sister of Joanna Presbury, wife of Charles Cadogan c.1740-1816.

The three Presbury sisters divided an estate inherited from their maternal grandfather John Trippet(t) of Field House, Awre d.1736, a father of five with no Male issue.

Strangely enough his maternal grandfather John Clifford, a descendant of the Clifford family (Rosamund Clifford) hadn't any Male 'issue' either.

John Trippett married Joannah Perry around 1702, her father Robert Perry of Kingswood, Wilts. was the second cousin of Jane Fitzwilliam (Wentworth-Fitzwilliam), second wife of Sir Christopher Wren.

John Clifford's great, great grandfather, John Walshe was King's Champion at the Coronation of Henry VIII in 1509, whilst another was Catherine Parr's cousin.

CADOGAN & PHELPS, Awre salmon fisheries drowning, 1885

While researching Awre in the excellent Welsh Newspapers site I found this article which I hope helps other researchers.

From the Cardiff Times, 25 July 1885

SAD DROWNING FATALITY AT AWRE.
On Wednesday morning, Mr Cadogan, lessee of the Severn fisheries at Awre, discovered the body of a man named William Phelps, a fisherman, of Awre. It appears that deceased was in Mr Cadogan's employ, and on Tuesday, evening he left home in order to fish in the channel with a lave net during the ebb of the tide. In order to do this he had to wade through a rather deep stream of water, in the middle of which was some putchers erected for taking salmon. On Wednesday morning Mr Cadogan, on visiting the putchers, discovered deceased in a stooping position, with his hands firmly clasping the wood work. He had apparently died from drowning. Deceased, who was 70 years of age, was subject to fits, and it is supposed that in wading through the stream, and finding the water rather too deep, he made for the woodwork, and having seized it was taken with a fit, and the tide quickly overwhelmed him.

HOWEVER the groom's father is said to be "Ian", not John as per the Baptism.
Now I don't know for fact, but I thought Ian was a far more modern name ?. I cannot find any Ian Phelps within this site's PRs, or GlosBMD/FreeBMD, at any time before the 1950s.
Could this be a transcription error, should it be John not Ian ?

---------

Note that the witness is a Thomas CADOGAN, one of a line in Awre thro the 1700s & 1800s judging from the PRs. Presumably the same fisherman who employed William at time of his drowning as per the newspaper article.

I also suspect this is the same Thomas Gadogan who was witness at the 1853 Marriage of Hannah BROWN/PAYNE/PARSONS & Phillip PRITCHARD, see this recent post.

==================

I have read with great interest this prior-thread about salmon fishing on the Severn in general and the CADOGAN family in particular. I believe members of the Cadogan family are still farming in Awre. A few years back while visiting the Forest I thoroughly enjoyed some Cadogan cider produced at Awre, spotted & bought from Cinderford Co-op, hopefully I can buy some more this Christmas.

Admin, please could this post be linked into this locked-thread, thanks.
