I know there is a Birmingham connection as William whilst born in Haresfield, was working in Birmingham in 1872 when he married, but as you say that doesnt mean his father was from there.

I suspect the 1842 Aston marriage may be a red herring - There is a son - Thomas - in Birmingham 1872 in the 1891 census....

Could very well be the man, however there is a marriage in 1842 in Aston that looks right, so would make him too young.

You are too good at this, yes thats the right Ellen certainly.
Seems strange she was working away in London 1 year prior to marriage in Gloucs, so must be a link to our William in London somewhere. I have been trawling ancestry but to no avail.

Yes thats the chap, he maries in 1872, and he appears 1881 - 1911, but no sign in the 1871, 1861 etc. Very odd! His father was Thomas Gardner according to marriage cert.

Gardner, Haresfield, mystery

Hello all,
My greatx2 grandfather William Gardner was born in Haresfield, Gloucs, 1853, his father's name on his marriage cert is Thomas.
All I know is that William listed Birmingham at the time of his marriage. I cannot find him on either the 1871 or 1861 census (anywhere!).
I have found a possible William born in Haresfield in 1853, son of John, but unless this is a second name or vice versa, the mystery remains!
Help appreciated!
