Sarah STERRY 1853 -1886 Longhope (reply)

I'll certainly accept the possibility of scrawl and mistranscription. I was also going to say, with reference to the other records, that if it was acceptable for Annie to have the illegitimate Laura baptised on her home patch at Lydney Primitive Methodist chapel, it is perhaps unlikely that Laura in turn would have been packed off in disgrace for Beatrice to be born and baptised several miles away.

Isaac/Isaiah BOSELEY YEMM 1859 Mitcheldean (reply)

None of this persuades me that Laura, the mother of Beatrice, had any other surname than Sterry. I have two reasons for saying that:

1. Why else would the curate have left the mother's surname blank if it wasn't that the mother's surname was the same as the child's and didn't need repetition?

2. I can't recall seeing any other example of an illegitimate child being baptised with the father's surname in effect given but the mother's surname left blank. (By contrast you used to get numerous instances of an illegitimate child being baptised with the father's surname as the child's second given name, which didn't happen here.)

I'd say it remains a mystery, but thankyou everyone for looking into it. I am currently expanding the Sterry branch of my family tree and if I find a Laura Sterry of an age to have had Beatrice around 1882, despite no registration coming to light so far, I'll post the news.

Isaac/Isaiah BOSELEY YEMM 1859 Mitcheldean (reply)

Sarah Yemm had three children.
William baptised at Abenhall October 10,1790 under name Yeam.
No father listed.

Mary baptised at Michedean Sept 4,1795 as Yem,
No father listed

Emanuel baptised at Abenhall Nov 26, 1801 or 1802
Father listed as John Bosley and mother as Sarah Yem

William used the name William Bosley Yemm throughout his life and many of his children changed their surname to Bosley in the 1850s and later. we suspect but have no proof that John Bosley was Williams father.
Is Isaak a descendent of this branch?

In the case of Emanuel, he used Yemm and his descendents also did until the 1880s when almost all became Bosleys or Boseleys.

Dewey, 3Xgrandson of Emanuel

Regardless of how many illegitimacies are unearthed, if you can find the missing link between my line and the Longhope/Ruardean Sterrys who go back at least to a marriage in 1539, you will be lauded as a hero by numerous of us Sterrys/Sterreys who can't find a direct line back beyond Richard Sterry's 1790s marriage at Minsterworth.

Laura L MOORE 1860 Mitcheldean (reply)

Thanks, Slowhands. It's an interesting possibility. Sterrys have abounded for many centuries not far from Mitcheldean, so conceivably (no pun intended) Laura Moore/More fell prey to one and took the rap whilst Beatrice took the surname. But it would still be unusual for the register to take that form, and there of course I'm assuming the transcriber got it dead right.

Another Sterry mystery (reply)

No. You may well be able to correct me but I don't remember coming across single mothers registering their children with the father's surname when the father is unstated and the child is base-born. (For example, I've been through over 200 years of baptisms over at Avening without seeing such an instance.) What you do quite often see in those days is the father's surname being given as the child's middle name. This one is plain Beatrice, the mother plain Laura.

Laura Eliza STERRY of Lydney - another mystery

Laura Eliza Sterry was baptised at Lydney on 02/08/1886 with a stated birth date of 28/06/1886. As far as available records tell, she was the only known Laura Sterry of those days in Gloucestershire. She was the base-born daughter of Ann/Annie Sterry (my gt-grandfather's sister) who eventually married Henry James, both partners being natives of Lydney.

Beatrice Sterry was baptised at Westbury-o-S on 18/05/1882, again being illegitimate. Her mother is registered as Laura of Mitcheldean.

So it appears Laura criss-crossed the Forest and had a baby over four years before she was born. I don't think so. Can anybody suggest how this miracle came to be recorded?
