Newland parish records (reply)

Hi again Roger,
I presume you didnt see my replies re William Matthews to one of your Wynols Hill House threads last night ?.
I think you will find some usefull info there, I do hope so.

Please follow these links:
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=35266

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=15360

Regarding your query, if you try you should find it's fairly easy to search this site's Parish Records.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=page&id=1

If you select, say, "Newland" as the Parish, and enter the "%" wildcard symbol instead of an actual surname then the search engine will display all the site's PRs for that Parish, apparently there are a stunning 37,000+ for Newland alone. Clearly you can then narrow it down by inputting your required surname and even dates(eg 1800 +/- 20yrs).

Newland parish records (reply)

I realise that this is not connected with the previous post; but are you able to tell me whether the Newland parish records contain entries regarding births ( and maybe baptisms) for 1779? I have identified a direct ancestor who was born in that year, and lived and died within the parish. His name was William Matthews. I am most interested in tracing the direct lineage back further.

By a different route, a cousin and I have established that our most remote ancestor was Jenkyn Wyrell, whose tomb lies within the Church.

My name appears on this site as Wroglet - but my true name is Roger Matthews.

I hope you will feel able to assist me in some small way.

Kind regards

Roger Matthews

Newland parish records BTs (reply)

My Thanks to all

I have found some records, out of Parish (Whitchurch) for baptisms relating to William and Elizabeth Jenkins. Elizabeth died in her teens and is buried in a poor grave at Newland. I believe William married Elizabeth Davis in Penalt about 1699..

I suspect that William and Elizabeth Davis went to live in the Bath or Bristol area as I cannot find any Baptisms or deaths in our records or those of Mike John which would indicate that they stayed in their local parish.

The link to Whitchurch/Ganarew is interesting as a branch of the family (Richard) ran a mill in the hamlet, also my 3xGGrandfather married his brothers widow Susannah at Ganarew.

Once again many thanks for all your help.

Kind Regards

Tony

Newland parish records BTs (reply)

Hi Tony

I compared the BTs against the PRs and although the time period you are asking for some of the top & bottom of the pages were still not legible or disintergrated. The BTs unfortunately are not always complete for the year, in this time frame should run from Jan to Dec but depending on clerk often do not. They were collected by the Bishop around the time of Ladies day which fell in June. So many years have missing time frame usually Dec to Apr so if this time frame corresponded with the bottom or top of the worn pages unfortunately this data is lost.

I hope this info will give you a greater understanding..........Gill

Newland parish records (reply)

Tony,

In answer to your questions the BTs have been compared with the parish registers and any corrections/additions added. The first register covering the period 1560-1667 has been partially eaten by rats!! with up to 33% of each page missing. After 1667 I am confident that we have the best possible transcript.

Newland parish records

I am researching my family Jenkins of Clearwell.

I believe our records of Newland parish specifically records for baptism does not include all of my families baptisms.

I believe some Newland records were damaged.

Could someone please advise:-

1. Dates of missing records
2. Do our records included Bishops Transcripts fot this period
3. If BT's are not included where can I inspect the BT's for Newland between 1775 and 1825.

Your help is much appreciated

Regards

Tony Jenkins
