At the Archive of Cider Pomology I have a letter from George Shayle of Upleadon Court (not quite sure it is Court, it looks like Ceourr but is prob.ly Court). He is requesting port wine and 2 galls of fine old rum, so it maybe a pub. Date is Dec 9 1852

I would say we have a family match. My 4th great Grandmother was Margaret Cave who married Thomas Robins. I am I believe 1st cousin 5 times removed of William cave.

I have just got off the phone from a long conversation with my grandmother (Margaret THOMAS nee CAVE). She gave me a lot of information about the CAVEs so here it is:

The two brothers came out to NZ separately.

Agustus CAVE 'Uncle Gus' came out first. He started a carrier business between Wellington and the Wairarapa (over the Rimutaka hills) in partnership with a Mr. Bannister. With the money he made he brought a farm just outside of Masterton on which he bred pedigree sheep and racehorses. (Incidentally the family kept a silk racing outfit in yellow and gold in a tin but it was later thrown out). He married a relative of his business partener (Mr. Bannister).

John Chamberlain CAVE and his wife Mary Jane (nee PERKINS) came out to New Zealand live and settled in the same area of the Wairarapa as his brother. John went to work for the 'horrible' Mr. Morley. Morley's wife always dressed in black and carried bunches of keys to everything around her waist.

Meanwhile, in England, William CAVE's (the father of John Chamberlain CAVE and Augustus CAVE)wife, Caroline, died. Without his wife William was lonely so came to New Zealand to live with his son, John Chamberlain CAVE. He settled on his son's farm. He kept a beautiful garden and is buried in the Masterton cemetery.

Augustus CAVE stayed in New Zealand but after about 3 or 4 years in New Zealand Mary Jane and John Chamberlain CAVE returned to England. They are both buried in Upleadon.

My grandmother has lots of photos, including photographs of portraits of William CAVE and his wife Caroline.

Did your John Cave have a brother called Augustus?. I see from the 1901 census that John had a son in New Zealand called Augustus.
The reason for asking is Augustus Cave went to New Zealand and I am hoping he went with his brother (your John).

I have Johns, parents as William Cave and Caroline, the John Cave in my tree matches your Johns circa birth year and is from the same area of Gloucestershire.

We also have photographs of her parents (also PERKINS) but they are unlabelled and we don't know their names. We do know that the PERKINS family invented the kinks in the hair-pin and were probably reasonably wealthy.
