W A Butt was a County Councillor (reply)

Admin

This is quite new to me - and complicates the business of tracing his life.

Born in Monmouthshire/Glos, a cousin of his told me (in the 1970s) that 'Willie' was raised in Pontesbury by his grandfather (i.e. William Hamlet Ashton's father) and this is possibly (but only possibly) given some credence by his appearance there in the 1891 Census. He could, of course, have been visiting.
When he was older he taught in Staffs, got married in Chesterfield, but continued to teach in Staffs until he retired.
I'm wondering whether your contribution means he was a County Councillor in Staffs concurrently with being a Governor of LGS, or whether these were sequential.

Apart from this information giving me another headache [ :) ] I'm grateful to you for giving me another aspect of his life to explore.

Regards

William H ASTON/ASHTON - East Dean 1881 (reply)

Well Slow Hands, Paul, M.P and Bob --- that little lot has sorted me out!! :))

Overall my researches have been going well - except in the case of William Butt. So, I decided to turn most of my attention to him hence my appearance on this list.
He was my father's half-brother but they never met, and I wanted to know about him.

When I posted my first message I couldn't have imagined how generous you would be with your time or how much information I would end up with.

Thanks again

Regards

Sam

Postcript: Bob (thanks for your interest) and Paul... Yes, I also concluded that the confusion about Lydley probably is down to spelling errors or the enumerator's mishearing.

Whereabouts of Lydley (reply)

'The only thing I still don't know is the whereabouts of Lydley'

The place name Lydley appears to be derived from the 1891 census return. The 1911 census return clearly states the birthplace as Lydney. I would suggest that the 1891 census enumerator has made an error and that the place name should have been Lydney on the 1891 return.

Whereabouts of Lydley (reply)

Sam, Have you considered that this is simply a misprint for Lydney. In those days illiteracy rates were quite high and census takers and others (including vicars) simply wrote down what they thought they heard. Lydney was in the Chepstow area for registration at that time. I grew up in Lydney and even in those days would find envelopes would arrive spelled all sorts of ways (even letters that had gone to Australia, Sydney, and back). The name of the person was spelled wrong so it is likely the town was as well.

Whereabouts of Lydley (reply)

Really grateful to MP Giffiths and Paul. Between your contributions I now have somewhere 'to go'.
The only thing I still don't know is the whereabouts of Lydley. Because of help received hee this has changed from being required informationto something that is just bugging me because I've never before failed to find a place I was looking for.
All I can offer in return is that I am researching the Pontesbury branch of the Ashtons of Trefeglwys, Montgomeryshire of which William Ashton Butt is a member.
If I can help in any way contact me here or via the Powys network

Regards

Sam

Whereabouts of Lydley (reply)

Thank you both for responding.

Paul - I'm afraid that the issue I am dealing with is potentially very sensitive and I don't feel I have a right to discss it with you.
However, I can explain what my problne is.
As M P Griffiths's reply shows (a) the Census entry gives the name of the child as BUTE but the birth (and shopshire Census Transcript) give the name Butt. (b) the birth record only provides the administrative district (i.e. Chepstow) but the Census record gives a specific - Lydley.
Problem -- I can't pursue this until I know where Lydley is hence which parish it lies in.

Hope this makes the situation clearer

Sam
