I can confirm that the conjecture was correct as I now have the relevent birth, death and marriage certificates and they are clearly the same people.

Mary Ann Brotheridge married Edwin Nicholls 5 Oct 1874, he dies 20 June 1877 (phithosis pulmonalis or TB) and she remarries to Samuel Millard July 31 1880.

As far as I can tell there is only one offspring Lilian Mary 5 Oct 1874.

It's a bit of a longshot but if posible would you enquire if they are aware of any scandal which occured with Samuel Millard after he remarried (to Olive Beale in 1914)?

I'd appreciate it. All of this research is a consequence of my Granny not knowing who her mother really was (and who her father really was as well). My Grandmother is 88 and although she is in good health (mentally and physically), I'd like to be able to tell her the real story, where she came from, who they were and what went on before she gets too old to appreciate it.

I'm building a picture and it isn't very flattering in many respects but the truth is more important.

what it shows me is that:

Mary Ann Nichols was a widow when she married Samuel Millard (Church of Tirley?) July 31 1880. So this means that her maiden name was not Nichols.

I can't read the handwriting but I think that her fathers name was George B?eth??idge.

Could be Brotheridge or Bothridge I suspect.

The Witnesses have the same surname and I'm going nuts trying to decipher it (I'll scan it and email it if anyone wants to give it a go)...

Firstly i wanted to say thank you for posting the above. It is locked or I would have kept this within the thread.

Secondarily this is what i have translated the information held there to mean (no small task for reasons which will become obvious).

John Millard marries Mary Brooks; at Hartpury Jul 18 1776
they have a son named:

John Millard who marries Lydia Chandler; at Ashelworth Dec 31 1810
they have a son named:

John Millard who marries Mary Ann Phelps: at Hartpury 20 Oct 1846
they have a son Samuel Millard (who marries Mary Ann Nichols 1880, and who must have passed away as later he marries Olive Beale 1914 (a name used by my Great Grandmother which she adopted between the birth of her son Lovell Glendower Smith 1906 and the marriage in 1914)).

This means that she either married someone named Beale or she took the name as her own dishonestly. The marriage cert between Samuel Millard and Olive Beale lists her as a widow so i guess that it is possible she married someone surname Beale.

From that time forward she took the name Olive Millard (and sometimes Eliza Millard as well). Sigh.

I think that I am getting to the truth and again want to thank everyone for their incredible generosity in helping me. This is by far the best genealogy site I have come across on the web.
