Mitcheldean / Abenhall. (reply)

Thankyou for the reply.

I had wondered about Mitcheldean but thought maybe I was trying to bend the facts to fit the story. However now you've suggested it I have suddenly realised that I was assuming Michael (as it does seem to say) was intended to be pronounced as in the boy's name and it could of course be an attempt to write 'Mitchel' phonetically. I have been assuming the 't' in Mitcheldean is sounded which is also a little presumptious of me.

Sofia MALSON, baptised 4 May 1806 in Abenhall.

Sofia(h) MALSON was baptised in Abenhall on 4 May 1806, parents Richard and Hannah Malson (record ID 143076).

Step forward a couple of decades to 1824 and the IGI has a Sophia MALSON marrying George COLVIN at the Old Church in St Pancras, Middlesex. The 1851 census entry suggests she was born around 1800 (the 1841 is broadly supportive) and describes her place of birth as 'Gloucestershire, Michael' (it certainly starts 'Micha' so it seems a reasonable transcription).

I am following in the footsteps of another researcher who has linked the two together but it seems to be purely on the coincidence of the name and county of birth and tempting as it is to follow suit, I'm unconvinced. If we assume she was baptised as an infant, as her siblings would seem to have been, then perhaps she added a few years to her age for appearances sake (she would have been eighteen at marriage, her husband thirty-seven) but that is highly speculative, and there is still the issue of the place of birth.

Has anyone uncovered anything about Sofia in their researches that might be of assistance?

Thanks,

Graham
