WINTLE of Westbury Rodley Stantway Cowley Elm (reply)

Hi Michael

John & Ann Wintle were my GGG Grandparents & had 9 children:
Sarah 1783, John 1785, Susanna 1786, Thomas 1788, Samuel 1790, William 1792, James 1794, Ann 1799, & Joseph 1803.

John Wintle died in 1820 & in his will left Yew Tree Farm & Pleydells jointly to William & Samuel as tenants in common. Their brother John died in 1826, leaving his farm, Cowley's Elm to his brother William, on payment of one thousand, two hundred pounds. I think William couldn't have come up with the money straight away as it was owned by Mr Collins in 1839 & leased to William, who finally bought it in 1846. (see www.british-history.ac.uk )
Samuel's family continued to live at Yew Tree farm.

I'm delighted in all this interest in the Wintles & their connections -- are you another relative?

Julien

Hi Sue

Are you descended from Edwin Vimpany? I do not know much about Edmund except that he came from Saul & married Susanna Wintle at Westbury on 22nd January 1811. Susanna was the daughter of John Wintle & the sister of Joseph the linen draper (see my original post). Edmund died aged 38 in 1821 & Susanna in 1819 aged 30. Their other children, Elizabeth, Edmund, & Susan, were left money & property in the will of Thomas Wintle, another brother of Joseph & Susanna.

Hi Linda,
Amongst the papers (dated 1965) in a box labeled "not ours" I have a snippet on Joseph & Mary WINTLE (twins) c. 21 june 1803, youngest of eight.
f. Daniel b.1739 ~ d.23 Dec 1808, m. Elizabeth Goode on 23 Dec 1785.
occupation- Labourer. Also a note "it appears Daniel & Elizabeth had children before Dec 1785, but his marital status prior to 1785 is uncertain"
Just goes to prove if you keep something long enough it will become useful.

Martin WINTLE ? (reply)

Hi Bri

Yes, please email me - I've changed the setting in the user area of the board so you can send me a message that way. I've just read the useful instructions on how to do that!
Interesting story about Martin's daughters - they must have lived well into the C20 --I haven't tracked them at all past the 1901 census. I would be very interested in the will. The linen drapers & their separate business addresses puzzled me for some time. I had a look at Joseph's house last year & also the shop in Clare street-- took some photos, which I could email you.
What's your line of descent from Joseph?

There is a will that best explains the linen businesses. Do you have a email address as the members link appears to be off as far as my computer is concerned.

Martin WINTLE ? (reply)

Hallo Bri

Fancy that! I am also descended from Joseph & Frances, via their son Henry (b1843). I had got stuck, as two Joseph Wintles were baptised at Westbury in 1803, but a very useful reply from Linda cleared that up. You have obviously got further with your research than me. I spent a day at Glos records office last week & came back with John Wintle's will, which mentions all the farms he owned at the time. Would you be the same Bri who posted a reply on Roots web in Feb 2002? I read that the other day but thought it was too old to respond to! Would be interested to work out what our relationship is? The main reason Martin came up was the reply from Slowhands about his purchase of Court Farm.

Vimpany), Thomas, Samual, William, James, Ann, and Joseph(1803) m. Frances. Joseph and Frances had 10 children. I am decended from Joseph and Frances. The family had several linen outlets in Bristol.
Martin WINTLE ? (reply)

Thanks, Slowhands for putting me on the trail of Martin Wintle -- from the IGI & various years of the census, I have established now that Martin was the son of Samuel & Maria Wintle of Yew Tree Farm , Rodley. Samuel was the brother of Joseph Wintle the draper (my GGfather) and their parents John & Ann were also the parents of James Wintle, the other Bristol linen draper, so that's cleared up that mystery - they were two brothers & a nephew. A sister, Susanna, married Edmund Vimpany of Saul in 1811, but they died in 1821 &1819 respectively, leaving their son, Edwin, to become James Wintle's business partner (1841 census). He seems to have died, as I can't find him on later years. Martin Wintle took over James Wintle's business & seems to have stayed in Bristol. Now it's back to the Parish registers for Thomas & Sarah, the parents of John.

Martin WINTLE ? (reply)

According to Victoria county history Martin Wintle bought Court Farm from the Colchesters in 1879 & it was sold to Glos county council in 1919. Martin Wintle evidently took over the drapers business from James Wintle ( 3 Bridge Parade, Bristol) & diversified into trading as a horse clothing dealer ( see Kelly's directory, Bristol 1902 - Historical directories).

Any more suggestions on the drapers connections?
