Mary Pye - Newland (reply)

Peter,

Regarding last statement above that John Pye was a grandson of Walter Pye. Do you happen to know which of Walter Pye’s children was the father of this John Pye at all?

I am descended from this John Pye and his wife Jemima Russell through a long chain of Russells. I have concluded that John is likely to be Walter Pye O’Mynde’s grandson but have not pinned down any corroborating evidence as yet.

Thanks,

Andrew

Mary Pye - Newland (reply)

Thank you rookancestrybest for your interest in Mary Pye. I have used the various sites that you mention with moderate success. I already have quite a lot information regarding the Ross Merrick Quakers. I am a member of the Quakers Family History Society and have been in touch with the Quaker Library in London.
Thank you jimashton for your reply. I am sorry but I have no information regarding your Pye tribe. However, I will show below the bare bones of Mary's line:-
Mary Pye b1683 at Upton Bishop d1723 was the youngest daughter of John Pye of Kilpeck who died in 1731. His eldest daughter Jemima b1676 at St Devereux married Arnold Russell and had three sons- Arnold, John and Richard. John Pye was the grandson of Sir Walter Pye of the Mynde.
Thank you slowhands for your comments which should help jimashton.
Seasons Greetings To You All.

Mary Pye - Newland (reply)

Peter

I am afraid I cannot answer your question, but am wondering if you or anyone else reading the thread can assist me.

I have a Maria Abiah Pye, baptised Ross on Wye 27 Mar 1815. Her parents were George Pye date unknown and my 1st cousin 5 times removed Abiah Marfell baptised 30 Jan 1784 Weston under Penyard. They were married 23 Oct 1806 Weston under Penyard.

Maria Abiah Pye 1815 who is my 2nd cousin 4 times removed married Timothy Marfell baptised 13 Oct 1799 Linton by Ross. He is also my 2nd cousin 4 times removed. Timothy Marfell's father John Marfell 1764 was the brother of Abiah Marfell 1784, their parents Jonathon Marfell 1738 & Jane Thompson 1745 had children from 1764 to 1790.

I am wondering if this links with your Pye family.

Quaker Records (reply)

The Society of Friends has very good records. I have found Quakers very helpful when looking at information for some Quakers in my family. (My family seems to have had a wide number of denominations of Christianity in it and I have found it fascinating to find this out!) I think if you just Google "Quaker records" you will find the links but if you are stuck I will look back at the sites I have found useful. Also try: http://www.hmwquakers.org.uk/html/ross_burial_ground.html and of course www.hmwquakers.org.uk
Explore I http://www.quaker.org.uk/library too.
I also found some local Quakers, who I met by chance, were extremely helpful in searching records on my behalf. There are also a number of Quaker trades.
Quakers did move around quite a lot, working for other Quakers and moving to where other Quakers lived and to marry. You need to bear in mind that some people were not fully fledged Quakers, they could attend Meetings without being officially Quakers and the records of these are not easy to trace. I would need to check but there is a special term for them, - there are some records of them if they attended meetings. There are good records of Quaker cemeteries and of their members. However I have also discovered that they are not the only denomination who called their places of worship the "Meeting House" as I have found that some early Methodists and Presbyterians also called their places of worship this too. I know that for yet another branch of my family it took a while to establish whether the family were Quakers, Presbyterians or early Methodists and found that the latter and neither of the former options proved to be the case.

P.S. Look at:
http://www.fordean.freeserve.co.uk/rosspm.htm - it states that a James Merrick in Ross On Wye was a Quaker whose house was used for meetings in the mid-1600s...

Mary Pye - Newland

Mary Pye b1683 in Upton Bishop married Walter Merricke of King's Caple in Kings Stanley on 17th February 1704. Mary, at the time of her wedding was living in the parish of Newland. Can anyone tell me why they married in Kings Stanley rather than Newland or Upton Bisho or King's Caple? Another oddity is that the marriage record is held by Hereford Record Office and not Gloucester.
I understand that Walter was a Quaker and members of his family established The Friends Meeting House in Ross. Mary was the daughter of John Pye of Kilpeck.
Any help with this family would be appreciated.
Peter Preece.
