Sorry i cant help you on your question as i have no further info on this line and have made no progress in finding my Richard Baldwin. When i posted the this question i had the wrong Richard Baldwin as the husband to Sarah Herbert. My richard baldwin was born abt 1744 but have not tracked down a baptism for him. if it is any help i do have my full tree on tribal pages the link is

Hello, I am wondering if you could clear up a bit of a mystery for me. You have a Mary Baldwin born in 1781, daughter of Richard and Sarah Baldwin, who marries Joseph Hale in 1805. I have a Mary Baldwin listed as the mother of John Baldwin. John was born in 1796 in Ruardean. John is listed as the base child of Mary Baldwin. As of yet I have not been able to determine a likely candidate for the father of John. In Sept. 1805 a Mary Baldwin marries a James Betham ub Ruardean. In 1806 a John Betham is baptised in Ruardean to a James and Mary Betham.

In the 1861 census entry for my John Baldwin in the village of Victoria, Bedwellty, Monmouthshire is John and wife, his daughter, son-in-law and another male, 55 year old John Badam (RG9 / 4004).

As of yet I have not found James or Mary Betham/Badham in the 1851 census records.

1841 census in Breconshire, Llyswen, HO107 / 1370/20 is the family of James Badham, age 60, farmer, Mary Badham, age 60, and John Badham, age 32

So, my question is if my Mary Baldwin who was the mother of John Baldwin is the same woman who married Joseph Betham who are her parents? Were there 2 Mary Baldwin's born ca 1781 in Ruardean? One who married Mr. Hale and one who married Mr. Betham?

I have two Moses Baldwins born about the same time in my Family Tree.

Together with two fellow researchers (who both post to this site) I have tried to ensure we have the right one married to the right person, together with their subsequent offspring.

Moses 1. baptised 20.3.1783 buried 1.7.1864 son of Richard Baldwin & Sarah Herbert.
Married Ann Brain 13.7.1803 Ruardean. Ann baptised 17.8.1783 buried 2.12.1812 Ruardean
Children Aaron 1804, Moses 1807 & William 1809
Census info :

Children Cornelius 1807, Abiah 1808, Lucy 1811 & Joseph 1814
No census info.

I too am descended from Richard Baldwin and Sarah Herbert, through his son Moses (b.1783). But I've come across a slight discrepancy and was wondering if anyone could help. I am interested in Moses' daughter Abiah, but looking at her baptism record on the Parish Records database, her mother is listed as 'Lucy'. The same goes for her brother, Cornelius. But the Moses that I can trace in the records was married to someone else entirely and had other children.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Was Moses living a double life?!

I have Richard Baldwin who married Sarah Herbert as being born 1744. They were married 15.10.1770, but unfortunately the marriage entry does not give parents. Like Turbo Chef I too would like to establish the parents of Richard Baldwin.

Dear Nigel,

I am a descendant of Richard Baldwin and Sarah Herbert's daughter Mary. She married Joseph Hale in 1805. I have not yet been able to establish with any certainty when and where Richard Baldwin was born but it does not appear to have been Ruardean. Sarah Herbert on the other hand has very deep Ruardean roots and I am also descended from her brother William.
