Tyler's Row/Terrace, Valley Road, Cinderford (reply)

Thought I'd post an update to this thread for anyone who might be, or might become, interested.

Seems Mark isn't coming back to give any more information from his Nan but what he did say helped to confirm I was following the correct line of Tylers.

Henry James Tyler (1855-1939) was the person Mark inferred had built the row of houses. I was more of the opinion it was his Father Henry Tyler (1814-1863).

The 1883 map, surveyed in 1878/9, shows the row so it was definitely built before then. It is identified in the 1881 census but not in the 1871 census but, as noted further up the thread, there is a commonality in two neighbours living next to each other in the row in 1881 and also living next to each other in 1871 so suggesting the row existed in 1871.

Henry James was only 16 in 1871 so it seems unlikely he was responsible for the building if it was completed by then. But as his Father died in 1863 it might suggest the row was built even earlier but I'm not able to find anything in the 1861 census to confirm that.

Henry Tyler came to Cinderford between 1851 and 1855. There's nothing to suggest he had the collateral to fund the building of a row of six houses. But in 1855 he married Mary Ann Cowmeadow. Her Father was one of the Cowmeadow boiler makers and had mines and quarries as well as the Victoria Hotel which Mary was living in and running when Henry Tyler appeared. I'm suggesting the row was built with Cowmeadow money and I wonder if it was actually Mary Ann that was responsible for it, maybe not only as somewhere to live for herself and her son but also as a form of income in retirement.

Mary Ann did live in the row with Henry James after leaving the Victoria Hotel and Henry James continued to live there after her death (and after marrying one of his neighbour's daughters). He later moved to Wagstaff House (the house up on the bank at Cinderford Bridge which was originally the mine buildings when Cinderford Bridge mine was operating) and there seems to be no further Tyler connecton to the row after that.

So it seems the row was built sometime between 1855 and 1881 and possibly before 1871 and that it was built by the Tylers to live in themselves, but probably as an investment/source of income too as they didn't need six houses.

Excellent. I will go and ask and record what she says. She has reams of stories and names of friends, memorise of the Italian prisoners of war etc.

I will get back as soon as I can. She now lives in Cheltenham and I am in Weston S Mare so it may be a couple of weeks.

It will be good to make sure the info she has in her memory is saved.

Hi,

I appreciate you started this thread a while ago but I have just signed up and came across it.

My Nan Nesta was one of several children including Milly, Margaret and Patricia. There were some boys too.

There father was Thomas Tyler who died when they were children shortly after he returned from WW1.I think sadly from TB.

My Nan told me that his father I forget his name but will find out built Tyler's Row. I believe for family but will happily find out more if you are still interested.

She is 89 now and has always told me lots of stories about Cinderford and her family.

Tyler's Row/Terrace, Valley Road, Cinderford (reply)

Hi Carole,

I made a mistake with my original research. Mary Ann was the daughter of Elizabeth who is listed as the inn keeper. So the Mary Ann Cowmeadow you are referring to is different.

Tyler's Row/Terrace, Valley Road, Cinderford (reply)

Some of the Trees or Ancestry suggest that Mary Ann Cowmeadow mentioned here was the daughter of William Cowmeadow and his wife Mary Hatton. The dates fit but I can't find a sister Elizabeth to have kept the inn. Is this a different branch of the Cowmeadows?

Tyler's Row/Terrace, Valley Road, Cinderford (reply)

Yes, sorry, I've already traced the building back to 1871 census. Forgot to mention that. Can't find evidence of it in the 1861 census though. There was a lot of building carried out in the area around that time so I'm assuming the row was built around then but no real proof of that. It could have been built for the workers of the iron works as it's known that a lot of the houses around the bottom of Victoria Street were built for that reason. But the row is a distance away from the other rows in the area and is of a different construction (if memory serves me). Could have been for more senior people at the works. There is a record of the works manager living around there somewhere but I haven't been able to pin point where.

Cinderford Iron Works

On the 1881 census, with William WILLOCK, wife Susan , (Rosetta aged 10 ) - next door to them is Eliza EDWARDS a Widow aged 66 - daughter Mary FREEMAN aged 33 - a widow and George EDWARDS a son aged 23

If you look at the 1871 census, East Dean , 29 of 34, District 18

WILLOCK (WELLOCK on Ancestry & Gloucestersbdm) (Rosetta is aged 1 month) were neighbours to Eliza EDWARDS aged 56 in 1871) - could the same row I think.

Tyler's Row/Terrace, Valley Road, Cinderford

I'm loooking for information regarding the row of houses previously known as Tyler's Row or Terrace. Current address is 122-132 Valley Road. I'm looking for information on when built, who built it and what is the Tyler connection.

Earliest reference to the name Tyler's Row is in the 1881 census at which time there was no Tyler living there. So far I have found that a Mary Ann Tyler (née Cowmeadow) and her son, Henry James Tyler lived in the row in 1891. Henry James was still living there in 1901 but in a different house. This is the only Tyler connection to the row I can find.

Mary Ann previously lived at the Victoria Hotel nearby. In 1851 her mother, Elizabeth, is listed as the Inn Keeper. Mary Ann married Henry Tyler in 1855. In 1861 Henry is listed as the Inn Keeper. Henry died in 1863 and Mary Ann continued to run the hotel until moving to the row sometime between 1881 and 1891.

Any assistance or advice of where to look for further information would be gratefully received.
