Someone from NZ has contacted me recently regarding Henry Croat who in 1944 left my grandfather William John Croat about £42 in his will. For some reason I cannot access the message on Ancestry at the moment, will have to get my computer man to help me.

Nice to 'meet' you. My maternal grandmother (Delsy Elizabeth Jones b 1894 at Mill Hill, Bream) was born to Thomas Jones and Sarah Ann nee Crote. Lovely to find a link via the Forum. I haven't been following the Crote side much but found an inquest for an infant child of Jack Croat in The Forester - September 25th 1914. Would this be the same family as yours by any chance?

My name is William Vincent Croat born June 12,1936in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.My paternal grandparents were William John Croat born 1886 and Mabel Frances Croat (Vincent)born circa 1889.They lived in Chepstow prior to emigrating to Canada in 1927.they had two children,a son William Henry Croat,my father ,born August 21,1912 and a younger daughter Molly Croat.Can we help each other ?

George Croat /Crote son of William and Catherine is my 2nd Gt-Grand Uncle. His sister Sarah , born abt 1819 at Hosley, married John Reeks. Their daughter Elizabeth was born at Tidenham abt 1839 and married my gt-grandfather Michael Roberts in 1860. The furthest that I can go back to is William and Catherine and I'm afraid that I don't know Catherine's maiden name etc.

Thank you for your reply. My grandmother who lives in NZ has found information about her family previously unknown ie the name of the ship they arrived from England to NZ on. She is curious about the family here in England. Her g-g-grandfather was John Croat son of William and Kitty. He married Sarah Norris who had another son John who emigrated to NZ, who in turn had a son called Henry in Canterbury NZ. My Great grandmother Irene( Henry's daughter) only died a few years ago at a ripe age of 92. The CROAT family in NZ is very large (My great nan had 10 children in all. So I would love to pass on any information about family links. Do you know if this family still has roots in the area? Thanks so much for your help

My GG Granfather's Sister Elizabeth Jenkins Married Robert Crote b1854 Grandson of William and Kitty (Catherine) His Father George Crote was born in 1831 in Woolaston Gloucestershire. I have a lot more Information on the Crote/Croat Family if you would like to contact me.

My gg auntie Elizabeth Morgan married a Crote:

"38.2 ELIZABETH MORGAN(baptised about 1861 Pillowell according to the 1871 census). She married WILLIAM CROTE about 1888 (not found the marriage, if it occurred) according to the 1901 census. WILLIAM CROTE married MARTHA EVANS on 19th November 1887 but, sadly, MARTHA died on 4th December 1888 according to this web site (hence the name of the first born of WILLIAM CROTE who could be the child of MARTHA or ELIZABETH). HANNAH DOWNS formerly MORGAN NEE HAINES (my gg grandmother) was living with WILLIAM and ELIZABETH CROTE at 29 Mill Hill, Bream at the time of the 1901 census. My grandfather WILLIAM HENRY MORGAN was living with HANNAH MARIA PEARCE NEE MORGAN (ELIZABETH CROTE’S sister) at 46 Mill Hill Street at the time (three generations in one street!). Had issue (according to 1901 census):

38.2.1 MARTHA CROTE born in Bream about 1889;

38.2.2 HARRY CROTE born in Bream about 1893;

38.2.3 JACK CROTE born 13th Nov 1895 in Bream, por, Mill Hill;

38.2.4 CARRIE CROTE born in Bream about 1893;

38.2.5 PERCY CROTE born in Bream about 1894.".

My family moved to South Wales so I have no knowledge of current Crote relatives in the FOD.

I am looking for descendants of or CROATS living in the area.
I am a descendant of William CROAT born abt 1789 in Horsley, married Kitty born in 1788 in Kingscote. Their Grandchild John Croat was born 1852 in Forest of Dean emigrated to Lyttleton, New Zealand in 1800s. He was married to Emma MOULTON (b. 1873) from Chepstow. Some family members who remained in England may have used the spelling CROTE/CROATE.
