I have just come into possession of a photo, it is of my Great Grand Mothers brother. He also was a Sewing Machine Agent, the photo is of him and his family outside a house called Glendale in Cinderford (think it is on St.Whites Road)and there is a plaque on the wall saying Singer Sewing Machine. I think the picture was taken around 1908. Hope you find this of some interest.

1891 looks more like "agent Singers Comp."

He is described as Sewing Machine Agent, which probably confirms the Singer connection.

George Dobbs (reply)

Hi Jean

My main intertest is the Marfell Family, but follow the siblings and parents of spouses and whilst these people are "connected" rather than "related" I find that such is the inter marrying in the Forest this often leads to others that I have in my Family Tree.

George Dobbs 1866 son of George Dobbs 1841 & Lavinia Herbert 1842 had 4 siblings, one of whom Frank Albert Dobbs 1884 married Amy Elizabeth Marfell baptised Ruardean 21.12.1879. I have the marriage certificate, if you would like a copy by email. Amy Elizabeth Marfell's great grandparents were Cornelius Marfell 1779 & Rosanna Herbert 1789. They married 24.7.1811 and on Rosanna Herbert's death in October 1817, Cornelius Marfell then married Tamar Herbert 1792 at Newland 20.6.1818. Whilst I have details of Tamar Herbert's parents and 6 siblings, I have nothing on Rosanna and have often wondered if there was a connection between Rosanna & Tamar Herbert. If you have any knowledge of this I would be extremely grateful.

George DOBBS, born abt 1866 in Cinderford

In my tree I have a George Dobbs, born abt 1866 in Cinderford Gloucestershire. His father was George Dobbs born abt 1841 in Weston and mother Lavinia Dobbs. On 1891 census George junior age 25 unmarried was shown to be working as "An agent at Singers Works". Could anyone tell me if this was the Singer Sewing Machine Factory or some other manufacturer? Interested as one of his ancestors in 1950 also worked at a Sewing Machine Factory as a Sewing machine repair man in Yorkshire. Regards Jean Herbert
