Hi Jenata,
Very little is known about Mary Pyle, only that she came from the Forest of Dean and now what I have been able to piece together from Census records. She had no siblings and I as yet, have been unable to find anything about her father who I think was Henry Pyle. I intend to get her NZ Marriage Certificate which will give me more details. Neither do I know much about Ann Gullick (my Great Grandmother). I am fascinated by Mary Pyle, a brave little woman (5'3") who came to New Zealand approximately 1878, all alone and subsequently married and had 15 children - she had been told she was too small to bear any! I am interested to find and make contact with descendants of her cousins, be they Gullick or Pyle. I am the youngest daughter of her youngest child and Mary's youngest and surviving granddaughter.

This may be nothing to do with your quest for Buhcanans in the FoD,but at the beginning of WW2 there was a family living in the Littledean Hill Road area of Cinderford who could have been from the West Indies.

We know about as much as you, Molly is not very forward with infomation.I know they have had some contact with family on st kitts but i would have to ask my father what he knows about that. Molly doesn't share much info with us and i know my nan (Letty) thinks the family history should be left alone. Hi Ruth,
I have been unable to get much information above Alfred on that side of the family. I understand from my father that probably the best person to speak to would be Molly. I believe that she, Archie, Dando and Vi have all been to St Kitts. Aslo, I think her daughter Tina may have done some investigation. I however do not have access to any of this. Do you? Do you have a tree anywhere that I could look at?
I have tried contacting the records office in St Kitts, but without a plae of birth they say they are unable to find an Alfred Buchanan. it is of course possible that Alfred was a middle name since all of Alfred and Mabel's children have 3 christian names but I do not know if this is so either.

Age of Alfred is stated as 37. He is listed as a widower at marriage so there should be a record of a previous marriage though most likely in St Kitts. Hsi father's occupation is identified as a general labourer.
The slavery/plantation link is most definitely correct as I seem to remember mention of Alfred's family "still owning a plantation" when I was a child.
The passage over states a first class cabin, which could I suppose fit with him being wealthy enough to afford if the family still ran a plantation. Arrival in 1907 would allow for him to marry in 1919 as the certificate states, and possibly to have married over here before that also, as he woul ahve been 25 on arrival.

It would appear from their wedding certifiate that Alfred's father was called George. Alfred (or possibly his father) was from St Kitts so that positively rules out any connection to Angus. Pretty sure this is the marriage of your Grandmother, if the certificate is ordered using Alfred's reference you should be able to confirm it and glean more about Alfred !

Buchanan in the FoD is rare, the only context I have is the Field in Coleford, which spurred me into this

The Mary Gullock b. abt 1857 referred to in the 1861 Census was my grandmother. She was actually registered as Mary Pyle but in the census her grandfather George Gullock b. abt 1815 spelt her surname as Piles. Mary was the daughter of Ann Gullick b. abt 1838 (daughter of George). I have traced Mary also through the 1871 Census when she was living in Ruspidge and by the time of the 1881 Census she had travelled to New Zealand and had married Samuel Dodge on 31 July 1879 in Christchurch, New Zealand. I recently visited the area of Ruspidge and Cinderford to see the area she had come from. Mary had no siblings. Mary seems to have lived with her grandparents George and Harriot and I am interested in tracing descendants of the uncles and aunts she was brought up with.
