Location of address on birth certificate (reply)

Hi S,
good to see you back online, was worrying from your absence you might have problems, I do hope not :-)
Yes the properties shown on the maps are indeed above the layby, I always thought it a bit "grand" calling this small lane the High Street.

Location of address Mount Crete Littledean (reply)

I have a birth certificate dated 1936 and the child was born at `Mount Crete` Littledean.
Does anyone known where this address was please?

The mother was unmarried when the child was born, could this have been a `Mother and Baby Home`run by the council or the church please?

Any information about this place would be very welcome.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give.
From `Twyver`

From memory 3 or 4 cottages at the top of the layby above the Littledean House Hotel

Mount Crete, The Ruffitt, Littledean, Cinderford, Gloucestershire, GL14 3JZ

Location of address on birth certificate (reply)

Hi Twyver,
Googling "Mount Crete Littledean" shows nowadays there are a few properties "at" Mount Crete, postcode GL14 3JZ refers, this is situated on Littledean High Street(behind the old Guest House) heading up towards the Ruffitt/Callamore. If you lookup this postcode on the Old Maps website www.old-maps.co.uk you'll see it's position marked on the opening page. However studying the various O/S maps included in the site, I cannot see any mention of "Mount Crete" on the maps themselves, so cannot say whether it refers to specific addresses or a locality, ie was the locality named after an old property, or vice-versa...
I cannot find any reference to Mount Crete within the very detailed history within the British History website
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=23258

I wonder if the name has Biblical or other religious origins, altho cannot find any evidence to support this. #

My suspicion is your certificate is referring to a private residence, not a "home", but I don't know. If there was such a home/rooms in those days I'd have thought it might have been within the old Workhouse building(s) which were further along Broad Street, but I'm only guessing.

Hopefully someone else will know for sure.

???

# The nearest hint of this that I can find is from ancient Greek mythology; some believe that Zeus, King of the Gods, was born on Mount Ida, the highest point on the island of Crete.... doesn't seem to fit the usual Forest traditions !
