Wait, Waite and mispellings were and may still be common in FoD. Name is variation on White. There were plenty of them around in late 18th and 19th Centuries.

There were quite a lot Waite's in Soudley/Bradley Hill at the time and not all related to my Waite's. You mention Bream and St Briavels. Faced with your problem, I would get myself down to Gloucester County Records and spend time on those Parish records on fiche. You'll probably find the answer. If not, widen the dragnet. It's a lovely place, only costs a couple of quid a day, and there's a nice Pub down the road where BBC Gloucester staff go for lunch. You'll hear some interesting chat.

The 1891 and 1901 Charlotte Jones are definitely my Charlotte, but the one born 52/53 who died in 1871 definitely isn't - because mine had to be alive to give birth to my grandfather (her last child of anything between 11 and 17 - Dad remembers 17, I've found 11 so far) in 1906.

Roger - thanks for the extra info, but it doesn't look like we share the same Waite.

I wonder how many Charlotte Wait(e)s there actually were locally? There's mine, there's the one of the 1890 marriage and there's Roger's 1852-71, all living in very close proximity at the same time.

I shall keep digging. What would really help is if I could track down the wedding - it must have taken place between 1873 and 1878 or so. If they got married at all, that is, I think they were rumoured to be a bit of a wild bunch (my grandfather certainly was!).

Charlotte Ann Waite 1852 - 1871 was daughter of John Waite (Bapt. at St. Peter's Newnham, 4Feb1827). Mother was Mary Griffiths (Bapt. Coleford Chapel of All Saints Newland 5July1829). John and Mary married at St. Paul's Parkend 2Jun 1850. Mary Griffiths was my GGrandfathers sister. May Ann was eldest child. She died 1871 and was buried at St John's Cinderford 7Nov1871.

There was scarlet fever in Soudley in 1871. My Grandfather lost two sisters to it back in May, although he was not yet born.

I did not think that the details kindly collected by Slowhands related to 'My' Waites until his 'Best fit' details, and to your original question. From then on are related to me as is Pleasant Stile. I took a great panoramic view from there over the Severn Valley.

There is a Waite Lady in Canada who has researched this family.

If you think 'Your' and 'My' Waites are one and the same please ask more. I have a mass of detail.

They were JOHN WILLIAM JONES (b.1 Apr 1856, Bream) and CHARLOTTE WAITE (b.1857, St Briavels). I thought I'd struck lucky when I found a marriage between John Jones and Charlotte Waite in the parish records on this site for May 1890, but it's not them, the birth years are way out.

The information I'm primarily looking for is the names of Charlotte's parents and any information on the family, plus John's mother's maiden name. His father is WILLIAM JONES (b. 1813, Swansea) and his mother is JANE. There were four children of the marriage, John William, Alfred (26 Nov 1857), Sarah Jane Maria (c.1861) and David John (c.1863) all born in Bream.

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated, I'm new to all this but totally addicted already!
