My 2nd Great Grandparents were John Bailey born 1803 died Australia 1851 and Mary Parsons born 1815 died 1882 Australia. I would be interested in any information you have on them.
Hannah Bailey b abt 1812 Lydney (reply)

There are indeed mistakes in both the works you refer too (and perhaps it is inevitable that there will be as the records are often not really detailed enough to yield demonstrably correct conclusions). Nevertheless, it is possible to iron out some errors. Hannah Bailey b. 1811 was not the granddaughter of King Bailey and her father was not King's son.

Hannah's father, Richard Bailey was born in about 1764 and married (1st) Esther Roberts around 1800. They had 5 children, Ann 1800, James 1803, Eliza 1807, Hannah 1811 and Henry 1815. Richard survived his first wife who died in 1833 and married Ann Parfett in 1834. He lived until 1855, informing the 1851 census that he was born at Newent and he was buried at Lydney. The Newent registers do not have his baptism but nearby Dymock does - his parents were John & Mary Bailey, whose first two children were baptised at Newent.

Obviously, Richard's age rules him out as King's son.

A mistake I picked up in Joy Whaite's work was the belief that King Bailey's son John got married. In fact he was killed at the age of 20 years in an accident with a wagon. This is certain as the death was the subject of a coroners hearing, recorded in the Awre burial register and is inscribed on King Bailey's gravestone at Awre!

However, I'm still working on this family and am by no means convinced I've got it sorted out. I'm reasonably certain about what cannot be true - I'm more hesitant about what certainly is!

Regards Ralph Cook

Hannah Bailey b abt 1812 Lydney (reply)

I would recommend looking at a publication called "From Little Dean to Enoggera" by Joy Whaite ( on line : http://www.whaite.com/family/oldbailey/ch02.htm )or search on line for William Bailey of Wheatenhurst. Joy undertook a family search of Baileys who emigrated from Gloucestershire to New Zealand and has an extensive records.

From the parish records, a Hannah Bailey was born 12 May 1811 in Blakeney to parents Richard and Esther Bailey.

From thie above publication:-

A Richard Bailey bap. 4 March 1792 at Blakeney was born to King Bailey and Damaris (nee Waite,or Wayte). King and Damaris married 24 December 1789 at Newnham.

King Bailey bap. 21 January 1769 is believed to be born at Wheatenhurst to John Bailey and Mary (nee Gaynor).

This branch of the Bailey family were referred to by Joy as the Bailey's of Elmore but basically the Baileys of Wheatenhurst, Elmore, Hardwicke, Longney and Quedgeley in Whitstone Hundred are all related to the Baileys of Longney (Maragaret Bailey of Longney Will 1547).

The above was also researched by Marie Lawry (a descendant of William Fowle Bailey)who produced a publication in New Zealand called "The Family Saga" which concentrates on the NZ branch stemming from William Fowle Bailey. I have managed to acquire a secondhand copy (paperback) which is somewhat delicate, however, provides an extensive history of the familys that emigrated.

Produced from research in the 1980's and 90's both these publications are very useful, however, they do not claim to be a complete authority (there are some errors).

Kind Regards

Keith Bailey
