Thomas MEEK married Elizabeth BOUGHTON at Mitcheldean (reply)

My gr. gr. gr. grand parents, Thomas Meek b.1819 married Elizabeth Boughton b.1819, m.1848, Mitcheldean.
I'm trying to sort out the parents of Thomas. The marriage certificate does'nt show his fathers name, or age of Thomas
I have, I think, 2 possibles.
1. Joseph and Hannah
2. John and Elizabeth

Can anyone out there help please, I have checked the records office in Gloucester, but again drew a blank.

Joseph & Hannah MEEK (reply)

The only clue that is a bit useful on the marriage certificate for Thomas Meek & Elizabeth Boughton is that Thomas Meek is from Lea Bailey and was a labourer. His entry for the 1851 census with Elizabeth Boughton shows him as a wood cutter, which could be deemed a labourer, and certainly not a Coal Miner - although they did flit in and out of coal mining as the mood suited. The christenings for Thomas Meek had one whose father was a labourer living at Lea, the christening took place in 1819. Sons more often than not, followed their fathers trade. I believe that Thomas baptised 1819 is the one who married Elizabeth Boughton as Slowhands has suggested on the web site. This is a shame for me as I am related to the Joseph Meek & Hannah who had a Thomas baptised 1821 but only "connected" to the Joseph Meek & Hannah who had a Thomas baptised in 1819.

Meek - Boughton (reply)

The Lea Bailey is a hamlet quite distinct from Wigpool. Lea Bailey is on the route to Ross on Wye from Drybrook, passing Drybrook Quarries and "The Cutting", Lea Bailey is at the bottom of the hill, it is a lovely place surrounded by woodland. A right hand turn in "The Bailey", as it is known locally, would take you to The Lea. Wigpool is between Lea Bailey and Mitcheldean.

As you know, Thomas in my tree had a father who was a Coal Miner, so I still don't know the right Thomas married Elizabeth.

I have seen the marriage cert and no fathers and more important fathers occupation are given, that would have sorted things.

Edmund MEEK born c1850 (reply)

Does anyone have evidence that the Edmund born 1850 and who had disappeared from the census of 1861 died, or was in fact the John who appeared on 1861 C
born probably c.1851? I have no evidence of Edmund's death but I am assuming this is more likely than that Edmund was called by a different name by 1861.

Joseph & Hanna MEEK (reply)

Dai

You need to exercise a little caution with Joseph & Hanna Meek, also Thomas Meek, the names are quite common and it is easy to get them the wrong way around.

"A" Joseph Meek married Hannah Cook 13.5.1809 at Ruardean. I believe the 1841 & 1851 census records for this couple are :

1841 Census
Joseph 58 =1783 Harry Hill
Mary 27=1814 Harry Hill
Hannah 25 = 1816 Harry Hill
Elizabeth 23 = 1818 Harry Hill
Aaron 18 = 1823 Harry Hill
Ann 16 = 1825 Harry Hill
Solomon 11 - 1830 Harry Hill

1851 Census
MEEK Joseph 69 Rtd Collier Ruardean
Hannah 60 Ruardean
Solomon 21 Collier Ruardean

Note this Joseph born 1782 by census records and baptism, is a different Joseph & Hannah census record found by slowhands in this posting. This Joseph Meek baptised Ruardean 1.12.1782 to Joseph Meek & Ann Harris.

If that is not enough confusion, there are two Thomas Meeks baptised to Joseph & Hannah at about the same time, this is not unusual if one dies, but I don't think this is the case as the baptism shows different residences and occupation for Joseph Meek, plus of course we know that there are two Joseph Meek and Hannah's :

(1) Thomas Meek baptised 11.4.1819 at Drybrook to Joseph Meek & Hannah, occupation Labourer residence Bailey Hill

(2) Thomas Meek baptised 14.1.1821 at Drybrook to Joseph Meek & Hannah, occupation Coal Miner residence Drybrook.

I would be interested in others observations on the above as I have the marriage between Thomas Meek & Elizabeth Boughton, also the marriage between Amelia Meek & Richard Goode in my Family Tree and had not previously positively identified the parents of Amelia Meek. My interest in Amelia (who is connected to me rather than related) is that she and Richard Goode had 6 children including a daughter Amelia who married a George Reed, they had 7 children, one of whom - Gertude Helen Reed married William Ernest Marfell.

Good Luck

Jim Ashton
